Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024Again, I am not an East Coast researcher, but hopefully I/we will learn more about the fault, geology, and potential triggers at the upcoming @seismosocam.bsky.social meeting in Anchorage! There is a special late-breaking session on the topic. (10/end) 🧪 010
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024Regardless, these events are rare, and certainly scary since they are felt infrequently and the East Coast is not prepared for them. But again, they are rare and should remain so, because this is a passive plate boundary. (9/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024The NJ thrust fault may have slipped for a lot of reasons, again, none of them related to active plate tectonics. I don't know a ton about East Coast geology (hive mind - chime in!) but slip may have been triggered by gravity, isostatic rebound, rising sea level... Etc (8/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024Another key difference between NJ and a typical CA quake is the mechanism. The NJ event was a thrust fault, and CA events are typically strike-slip faults. But again, NJ was not related to plate boundary tectonics - it is NOT a subduction zone, whereas CA IS an active transform boundary. (7/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024This all means that a M4.8 earthquake in NJ could be felt very differently than a M4.8 in CA. Another factor, ofc, is how "ready" the population (and buildings!) is (are) for an earthquake this size. These are pretty standard in CA and people are used to/ready for them. Not the case in NJ. (6/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024The moment magnitude (here M4.8) is a calculation based on 1) amount of slip and 2) slip surface area. This magnitude calculation is thus unrelated to the shaking the earthquake produces (although of course, there is correlation - larger slip typically causes more/larger shaking). (5/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024Rock types also affect attenuation. Hard rocks (like bedrock in NJ) transmit energy faster than sediment, but do not amplify waves as much as sediment. Think of shaking a rice crispy treat vs a cube of Jello. Rock types and sediment cover absolutely affected how far/well this thing was felt (4/n) 🧪 100
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024The depth of the earthquake (4.7km) is standard, on the shallow side for a crustal eq (0-15km). Shallow earthquakes will typically be felt more intensely than deeper earthquakes because shallow earthquakes undergo less high-frequency wave attenuation, so you feel more of the energy. (3/n) 🧪 120
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024This earthquake happened as a result of slip on an ancient fault. This part of the continental margin is a passive plate boundary, and does not accommodate active plate tectonic motion. The fault that slipped probably does not separate two tectonic plates (most faults actually don't). (2/n) 🧪 150
Dr. Maureen Walton @marinemaureen.bsky.social · 10/04/2024I thought I'd make my first science 🧪 post about about the recent NJ eq in light of some conversations I had about it afterward, and some not-quite-right takes I saw. My info is based partly on stats from the USGS page: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/... which is always a great spot to start. (1/n) 161
