5 things emails (finally) ending with a request to "improve DoD" by providing "one idea that will improve the Department’s efficiency or root out waste"... My one-sentence idea is going to have a *lot* of semicolons...

Heartbreaking to see these wonderful NCEI datasets being decommissioned: www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume... I sent comments about the impacts of the loss of these data to ncei.info@noaa.gov and encourage anyone who uses NCEI data to do the same. 🧪

I don’t even know how this could be presented as being in service of anything other than hindering scientific progress.

I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...

Allhands today discussing probie layoffs. The director of my lab just broke down after a question. He's not the only one. This is simply cruel.

Thankfully, I finished my 3-year probationary employee at my current agency last October, but I've been a Federal employee and a government researcher for 9 years next month. Just some context as far as who they are firing right now. 🧪

@nytimes.com "The Morning" email subject today: "Can Trump do that?" followed by some analysis about all the unconstitutional stuff he's doing. Suggested subject fix: "Trump can't do that" See how easy that was? Do better.

Yesterday my Division head had an allhands. He's great, and it was very professional. But reading between the lines, all I heard was "malicious compliance". 🫡

@nytimes.com email this morning, "Remaking the government" "We're covering the overhaul of the federal government." "All of this news can seem chaotic and unpredictable. But beneath it all, Trump has a vision." "Much of what [he's] doing might be illegal." ...MIGHT?? Y'all HAVE TO DO BETTER.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

🧪🌊 New research on a field of pockmarks—large, circular depressions on the seafloor—offshore of Central California has revealed that powerful sediment flows, not methane gas eruptions, maintain these prehistoric formations. Learn more: www.mbari.org/news/new-res...

New 🧪 paper out on pockmarks offshore central CA! I collected/processed some of the cores used in the study, which was led by Eve Lundsten and MBARI @mbarinews.bsky.social. We found turbidites in the pockmarks suggesting they are maintained by sediment flows. More: www.mbari.org/news/new-res...

I thought I'd make my first science 🧪 post about about the recent NJ eq in light of some conversations I had about it afterward, and some not-quite-right takes I saw. My info is based partly on stats from the USGS page: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/... which is always a great spot to start. (1/n)
