Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution
The Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution is dedicated to educating students to advance our understanding of the ecology and evolution of extant and ancestral organisms, populations, and communities. In Ecology, the focus is on uncovering the mechanistic and evolutionary drivers of patterns and processes across biological scales, from gene regulation to ecosystem structure and function, including the role of communities in biogeochemical cycles and their adaptive responses to environmental change. In Evolution, we investigate the processes shaping changes in organization and dynamics of organisms, populations, and species at molecular, developmental, morphological, and physiological levels.

Exploring your family history this #NationalRootsDay? Ancient DNA can tell us a lot about family relationships in the past. DNA analysis of early medieval burials in England even found an individual with a grandparent from West Africa! 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 🏺 #Archaeology
Graph of the results of principal component analysis, displaying the Worth Matravers individuals, alongside other early medieval aDNA samples from England (yellow squares; Gretzinger et al. 2022) and contemporaneous North African individuals (blue triangles; seventh to eleventh centuries AD Guanches from the Canary Islands; Rodríguez-Varela et al. 2017). Modern samples (grey crosses) from West Eurasia and West/North Africa are shown in the underlying plot. Whilst almost all the individuals from early medieval England fall neatly within the range for modern west Europe, one (EAS003) is in the range for modern west/north Africa.

Putting aside the deeper issues of why this analysis was done and how it has been promoted, the choice to broadcast a tv show before releasing a preprint should make people skeptical of the results. How can one be sure of their scientific claims?
