Benchmarks for cybersecurity are everywhere and mostly measuring the wrong thing. We reviewed evals from Microsoft, Meta and academia and found they don't measure what matters for defenders in real IR situations. 🧵 s1.ai/benchmk1

FDR just passed you a fruit juice and vermouth martini. it is critical that you earn his support for a germany-first wartime strategy. do you accept? ( Y / N )
“Roosevelt did not take drink orders, but improvised new and eccentric concoctions, variations on the whiskey sour, Tom Collins, or old-fashioned. The drinks he identified as “martinis” were mixed with too much vermouth, and sometimes contaminated with foreign ingredients such as fruit juice or rum. Churchill, who preferred straight whiskey or brandy, accepted Roosevelt’s mysterious potions gracefully and usually drank them without complaint, though Alistair Cooke reported that the prime minister sometimes took them into the bathroom and poured them down the sink.”

This blue Bay Area county insists it has 'zero contact' with ICE. But it gets $$ for sharing its info with federal immigration authorities. It's all part of a little-known data-sharing program that exists around the country & only some places have quit. really critical new reporting:

A widespread data-sharing program highlights financial ties between local police and immigration enforcement—and how even sanctuary jurisdictions still feed “the deportation machine.”

Listening to Musk talk about federal debt on an X space and how it's a major problem that the US spends so much paying off the interest on that debt. It's something he is an expert in. He borrowed $13 billion to buy Twitter and was paying $1 billion a year in interest on that debt every year.

This is the supreme irony of the MAGA schism over H-1Bs. Many workers who stayed at Twitter after Musk’s takeover did so because their status in the US was contingent on their employment. They kept a site running that was then used by MAGA folks to question why they were here in the first place.

Been seven years since I first read this, on the English language's *completely universal but totally invisible* adjective hierarchy, and I can honestly say I've thought about it most days since.
Adjectives in English absolutely have to be in this order: opinion-size-shape-colour-origin-material-purpose Noun. So you da. Have a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife. But if you mess with that word order in the slightest you'll sound like a maniac. It's an odd thing that every English speaker uses that list, but almost none of us could write it out. And since since comes before colour, green great dragons can't exist."

this deserves a Megalopolis sized budget and a Charlie Kaufman script
[tumblr post from user brainstatic (brain static)]

I want a Santa movie where he's actually Saint Nicholaos of Myra. Three kids run away from home and find a portal to the Council Of Nicaea in 325 AD. Then the kids watch him debate the promulgation of canon law. In the end they return home and tell their parents that presents aren't important so long as Pentecost is counted 50 days after Easter on the Roman solar calendar and not the Jewish lunar calendar.

And the kids tell their parents the whole story and the dad is like "those kids and their imaginations."
But then he sees a piece of paper in the dog's mouth and goes "whatcha got there boy? Is that... orders from the Holy See that the schismatic bishop Meletius is to remain in Lycopolis and keep his episcopal title but the ecclesiastics ordained by him must again receive the laying of hands?
But…how?" And then he gazes off to the sky and you hear a light jingling of bells and then a voice over goes "Ho ho ho! The baptisms performed by the Paulian heretics are invalid! Merry Christmas!"
