This is a case worth following for anyone who cares about academic freedom. I hope the article will only be the beginning of an investigation into both the firing itself and the increasingly repressive measures taken up against work that in some vague sense is deemed ‘too political‘.

Happy Friday, here's my second favourite (erm, hymnal) poem Berkeley wrote about tar-water. Absolutely stunning opening line IMO
Image is a snip of a part of a page from a MS Word file containing the words of a poem George Berkeley wrote about tar-water.
The words:
Hail vulgar juice of never-fading pine!
Cheap as thou art, thy virtues are divine.
To shew them and explain (such is thy store)
There needs much modern and much ancient lore.
While with slow pains we search the healing spell,
Those sparks of life, that in thy balsam dwell,
From lowest earth by gentle steps we rise
Through air, fire, æther to the highest skies.

Just some random (Marxist (Obviously)) thoughts about the whole tariffs thing: A lot of people seem to be approaching this as if capitalism is generally a harmonious happy system in which (pace Ricardo) if trade is just left alone then everyone benefits because the ‘economic’ logic bears out.
