Why is it that the Emmys are all being won by TV shows I've watched and the Oscars by films I haven't? Is it a getting-older thing or am I just painfully middlebrow?

Wired earphones (a) drain a phone battery so much less (b) don't need charged themselves (c) are plug and play without having to do anything with settings or pairing (d) are so much cheaper (e) are harder to lose. I have switched back to them and regret nothing.

Digital cameras and wired earphones are back - and 'a bit more real'
We're surrounded by more advanced tech in 2026, so why are young people going back to basics?

I feel like I've come of age as a trail runner. After four years, today - for the first time - I experienced what I shall euphemistically call a bovine pursuit situation.

A week holidaying in Scotland and that's another thirteen Munros ticked off. Still 150 to go.

100th Munro by public transport today - a very windy An Socach. Currently 51 by train; 37 by bus; 9 by train and bike; 3 by train and ferry; 1 by train, ferry and bike. Many more still very reachable.
Map of Scotland with 111 of 282 pins, corresponding to Munros, marked blue or done.Me at a cloudy An Socach summit, waving at the camera, with full weather gear, including face cover. It was cold.Me on a bus.A less stormy view of the Cairngorms, taken today. Hills, with a path leading off into the distance, snow on the sides of the distant peaks.

I just suddenly remembered Beanscene and felt every one of my [redacted] years. At least some of the 38-year-olds of Bluesky must remember them, surely. Also - is this how being in one of those neighbourhood nostalgia facebook groups feels? (Without far-right-bait AI images, obviously.)

I crested on to this view just as my LOTR playlist hit the section as they run out of the east gate of Khazad-dûm. Appropriate. I stood for a moment and let the music and mountain combine. Fortunately, I don't think that, by nightfall, these hills will be swarming with Orcs.
A mountain, made of rock unusually white for Scotland, with a loch nearly two thousand feet up, on a clear moment on a spring day.

SNP 41 seats ahead of Labour. It'd have been a brave person who put money on that result on the morning of 5th July 2024.

It is 2032. President Cumming is invested at Holyrood Palace in an independent Scotland. Yet people still huddle round, watching a livestream of the Highland count that has entered its sixth year. Thought has left them. All they can hear is the music. Hear it, but also see it, feel it, taste it.

Just voted. Six a-boards at the polling station, three featuring bar charts: 2021 result on the SNP board, @ballotbox.scot projection on Green, @electionmaps.uk projection on Labour. Being a tactical voter must be so confusing these days.

Labour doth protest too much about this evening's revelation of Sarwar sidling up to Offord. It's believable because they have clearly been briefing that they planned to do exactly that.

A Strava page showing Marco ran 43.84 miles in 8 hours and 7 minutes this morning. He is pictured with a clubmate at the start. He is clearly trying to show off and should not be rewarded for doing so.

Growing up I was a kid in one of those 80s/90s households that only ever had a handful of videos, generally watched over and over. This was one, picked up from a bargain bin. It was watched precisely once. To this day it is my goto when someone asks me what my least favourite film is.

A very Edinburgh problem. Repeatedly seeing a "wee gay hiking club" on Instagram and thinking it looks like a nice crowd and you should join, not getting round to it before its founder ends up on #theTraitors, now worrying if you do try to join you'll seem like a groupie. *sigh*

My take on #theTraitors is that the secret Traitor is great. It bottles a little of that speculated twist of one series just not telling the viewers who the Traitors are. We now get to play the game along with the contestants, though probably with extra red herrings thrown in by the edit.

I know it's shallow, but sometimes you do just want people to ask you on Monday what you got up to at the weekend.
Strava map of Marco running from Stirling to Perth, a course that should have taken 51 miles but took him 57 because he was a very silly boy and accidentally took the wrong turn. Twice. In his defence, the second time someone had turned round the direction sign.

A map of Scotland, with pins in each mountain classed as. Munro. 85 are coloured blue, indicating they have been climbed by the person the map belongs to. 197 are in red, indicating they have not been.Marco leaning over the camera and doing the exhausted equivalent of a smile. A small cairn is visible in the background, indicating this is a mountain summit. There is fog so about as little view past the cairn as yesterday. It remains July.A sign board documenting the battle of Glen Shiel, presumably added to indicate in an unsubtle fashion where Marco climbed the 85th Munro.

Scottish mountaintop views. Nothing can beat them.
Me with a buff over my face to protect my face from the wind, an almost total whiteout behind me on what can only be identified as a hilltop from the context of the attached wording. Please remember it is July.

This may look cute, but trig points only do this when they're very distressed.

Are there any alternatives to Google out there that provide a better search? The last few years I've felt result quality has been sliding and now the answer-by-numbers AI response at the top is just getting too much. Time for it to go the way of AltaVista. Recommendations welcome.
