I sure did not expect Gemini to spill the beans in response to my request for a cooking timer. And yet it did. Maybe it thinks I speak JavaScript. The timer sure works. @kevlin.bsky.social does this quality as one? Software revealing its guts not just in failure? 🤔

I'm loving the new e-ink displays that are appearing across Stockholm's SL public transport network. They are sharp, clear, work high contrast and low power consumption.

Starting the new year with a new 📺 terminal emulator on Mac. I used iTerm for a long time and completely by chance bumped into 👻 ghostty.org. It's written in zig by Mitchell Hashimoto, has just been released and I'm ❤️ loving it. It's fast, os-native and feature-rich with sane defaults.

This time of year is a good opportunity to test your code with regards to DST. I wrote a simple app that pulls stats about my electricity prices and does some analysis. Suddenly my app fails. Turns out Pandas would rightly want me to explicitly declare when I parse UTC times. Timezones are hard.

Almost anywhere I look there is an opportunity for the software we're interacting with to get better. Here, something as simple as sort order is missing. I think some of this is related to the fact that quality professionals are undervalued. What else? I can't see AI fixing any of this.

A way I'm beginning to see AI used (or specifically LLMs and Agents) is providing a new interface (chat, voice) over existing systems and applications. Maybe the interface is more natural but it doesn't seem to be more efficient. Are we going to excuse bad usability and un-ergonomic design this way?

I worked with Staff Engineers who wrote more code than any other engineer in the company. I worked with ones who wrote less code than I did. It's not an either-or. It's necessary to see the big picture, it's possible to see the big picture and code. There are many ways to have an impact, all valid.
