these past few months have been some of the worst months i’ve ever experienced in terms of my health.

i got diagnosed with several conditions in addition to my existing disabilities, most recently being IIH - idiopathic intracranial hypertension - and ESS - empty sella syndrome. essentially, i have too much cerebral spinal fluid around and inside my brain, and it’s compressing things it shouldn’t such as my ventricles, my pituatary gland, my optic nerves, etc. IIH is also known as “pseudotumor cerebri” - false brain tumor - because of the way it presents.

i have a new medication to treat the IIH that’s causing severe fatigue, weakness, muscle pains, etc etc etc … and i can’t really stop taking it because I risk going permanently blind if I do.

yesterday we found out that my IIH had already started pressing on my optic nerves. it went from being a possibility to a reality scarily fast.

good news: my new medication seems to be helping lower the pressure in my brain! it’s just scary to think about how close i was to vision loss or complete blindness. so much of my life currently revolves around my sight. i create art, i create graphics, i livestream. i play incredibly vision-intensive games. i read so much. i spend hours staring at tiny details on a screen.

within three weeks, i went from taking my vision for granted to wondering if i will be able to keep doing any of it. (and while there are some games you can play with blindness, i fear dead by daylight may not be very accessible in that way).

sooo many questions have filled my head…
will i still be able to stream?
will i still be able to play dbd?
will i still be able to make art?
will the medication keep working??
author’s note: this is one of only two medications that can treat this condition, and im allergic to the other one… i genuinely dont know. and that uncertainty has been very difficult to process.

As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin.
We need more stories about us and our culture.
You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.
