Some discussion of the UK rejoining the EU on #newsnight this evening. 15 minutes of talking and the UK's only land border was completely ignored.

Former NUI and Trinity voters DO need to register for the new constituency - many don't know that so do please spread the word! And we also need tp keep pushing for real Seanad Reform that gives everyone a vote!

Someone here in the pub has a pair of special Eclipse binoculars. It feels wrong to point binoculars at the sun but they actually work. Looks like it's about 10% occlusion in Dublin at the moment

Doing some Crisp Science. In a double blind test, FreeStayto are the clear winner. The test subject that was given two sets of PresbyTayto was very annoyed
Two packs of Tayto crisps. The yellow one is from the North of Ireland (aka PresbyTayto) while the red and blue one, which is much better, is from the South (aka FreeStayto)

"Hello barkeep, can I have 2.2727272e-7 Olympic swimming pools of Guinness please"
“We’re going to double the capacity of Guinness during the course of this plan [by 2031],” said Lewis, adding that the future of the brand was “very bright”.

Production capacity is slated to increase from 8.2m hectolitres (mHL) today to 15.7m by 2031, an increase equivalent to 300 Olympic-sized swimming pools of the black stuff a year.

First time I've seen Starlink as public WiFi. Makes sense on a remote island off the NW coast of Donegal. (Yes, I know other places have probably renamed the access point)
WiFi details in the Hotel on Tory Island in Donegal. The access point name is Starlink.

There's additional peril here. I've brought my son to the pub to watch the match and the last bus home is in 30 minutes.

More people at the All Ireland Hurling final today than the World Cup final.
Some statistics about the MetLife stadium where the soccer world cup final is being played. The capacity is 80,663 today, whereas a sold out Croke Park is 82,300

I've just wandered home after a decent night in town and was struck by the amount of colour and joy in the city centre on my way. Then I realised it's the CMAT crowd. More power to her, and her fans.

How about having a directly elected Mayor head this up, rather than a secretary general from the civil service? The same body will be chaired by the CEO of An Post. What civil society involvement will there be?

If the AMOC collapses it will be a climate disaster to end all climate disasters, for Ireland especially. It was one of those 'low probability, high impact' events, like ice sheet collapse in Antarctica. Turns out it isn't low probability after all.

Well, I thought it was going to play out like a Tom & Jerry cartoon when one of the cats caught a mouse outside and let it loose in the kitchen. The poor mouse is now hiding somewhere behind the washing machine waiting for the cat to get bored and wander off before (hopefully) making an escape.

I was glad to see the Trump caricature roughly erased outside Vicar St a few months back. The replacement is perfect.
Two photos of the mural of famous figures outside the Vicar St venue in Dublin. In the upper image there is a Trump shaped gap between Mother Theresa and Bono. In the lower image the gap has been filled with Ms Piggy from The Muppets looking fabulous in a pink dress.

Gavin Friday in Vicar St this evening. He hit all of the right notes. Some sung, some outspoken. Geopolitics, Trans Rights are Human Rights, and pussy jokes. I always thought 'Angel' is criminally underappreciated: youtu.be/JWJvlMkXdEc
A quiet moment at the Gavin Friday gig in Vicar St this evening. He's sitting at a table while singing, there's a wine bottle and glass on the table. I'm pretty sure they're both full of water.

I have a few suggestions for the British Mint's new note designs..
Percy Metcalf's Irish coinage designs from 1928. They all feature animals.

They were the first coins minted by the newly independent Irish Free State. They had a harp on the obverse, unlike other Commonwealth countries coins of the time which all featured the king's head.

Claude: THAT'S THE WHOLE JOKE. "I can see this is a sponsored ad from Pangea Dubai promoting waterfront real estate developments with promises of "2-3x returns" and highlighting three waterfronts "set to explode in 2026."
The ironic juxtaposition here is stark: the ad uses the phrase "set to explode" to mean rapid growth and development, while Dubai just experienced actual explosions from Iranian drone and missile strikes. The luxury waterfront properties being marketed as safe investment opportunities suddenly seem rather less appealing when the region is experiencing active military conflict.
The ad's enthusiastic tone about "huge investor demand building now" and "new zones entering early launch phase" takes on a darkly comic quality given that potential investors might be more concerned about geopolitical stability than beachfront ROI. Nothing says "prime real estate opportunity" quite like being within range of ballistic missiles.
The pristine turquoise waters and palm-lined beaches in the rendering look particularly aspirational when the actual Dubai waterfront recently had interception debris and smoke plumes. The timing of this sponsored content appearing after Iran's attack is almost impressively tone-deaf—or perhaps it's just the algorithm's blissful ignorance of current events."
