9 games that permanently changed my brain chemistry and made me what I am. Last one is a bit of an esoteric pick and it didn't affect my taste for *games* per se but my taste in fiction and atmospheric storytelling overall, so arguably it had a stronger effect than the others in a way.

Reading 'games have terrible writing' threads reminds me of how subjective 'good writing' actually is, because I've loved plenty of stories in games that get branded with 'terrible writing', but I can't stand reading some fandom darling authors like Sanderson or pretty much anyone recced by booktok.

Genshin thoughts: the new AQ is nice and I'm glad to see the Moon Sisters' take on what happened with Nibelung isn't the same as Nicole's take. But I'm not sure I like the consistent overall theme of "who cares about systemic injustice or truth if our friends are happy in the system."

Here's the thing so many people get wrong about the whole CRT blending thing: It only really did that on crappy CRTs with noisy analogue RF inputs. I should know. I once had a cheap hand-me-down TV that I had to manually tune with a dial. Most pixel art of the time was DRAWN on CRT screens.

I was just exposed to one of those 'Why you should only play retro games on a real CRT monitor' videos. They did a comparison. Sonic's alternating pixel 'transparency' waterfall on A: A modern flatscreen, B: a CRT, and C: with an emulator filter. A & B were identical. The 'blending' was only on C.

Really seems Clair Obscur is going to clean up in the various GOTY awards because it's a safe, broadly liked game. All the runner-ups - Hades 2, Blue Prince, Silksong - are either the best thing ever or complete garbage depending on who you ask. Funny to see both claims on my TL in rapid succession

Clair Obscur might be the perfect example of videogame 'Oscar Bait'. Glossy and professionally produced, mostly realistic aesthetics, a familiar genre with a little twist, a Meaningful And Emotional story, and safely within the social mores of western pop culture. No asian 'weirdness' here!

This all sounds like criticism, and no, not really. It's a very good game and probably deserving of most of the praise heaped upon it. But almost every part of it feels like any sharp edges have been sanded down for palatability. It gives it a glossy mirror sheen and palatable, mainstream appeal.

PW is tragically funny because you can go back and see how this literacy backslid in real time. English reviewers of 1 called it an adventure game because they correctly saw its resemblance to those older games. But as VN locs later exploded, people erroneously connected the dots in unintended ways.

When I speak of official locs being an unreliable indicator of genre evolution because commercial interests inherently skew and limit the historical threads that can be perceived, it's because of stuff like that: games getting retconned into genres and discourse they never participated in natively.

I genuinely think folks abroad wouldn't have so much trouble keeping Japanese adventure games and their many genre progeny semantically straight if we'd at least localized any more of the former whatsoever in-between the releases of, like, Snatcher in 1995 and Phoenix Wright a literal decade later.

What movie did you see way too young? Akira when I was 4 years old. It was showing on TV for Children's Day, I kid you not. Absolutely no warning. I don't remember much at all from it except that I ended up crying and asking "why would they do that?" Probably due a "rewatch" one of these days.

I say Xu Shu because I'm actually not sure if Xu Shu came to serve Liu Bei for 1 battle because he actually admires Liu Bei for real or if it's because of his massive crush on Ziluan. It's probably both but I don't know what's higher in the ratio lol.

I feel like what people think about Bailuan and his plot really hinges upon how much you're able to care about Ziluan as his own character. If your investment in him is basically his interaction with RO3K history and crew, Bailuan isn't enjoyable. If you don't like him, Bailuan is an annoyance.

I usually find ZGL to be a boring character but I really like this portrayal of him. He's just a nerd who has to pretend to be this inscrutable divine genius because that's how he needs to be seen....of course he wants to keep the guy who just visited him because he liked fresh salad.

One thing I do like about the bonds in this game is that bonds unlocked in the early chapters and the late chapters have rather distinct tonal differences. There's about 25-27 years between the prologue and chapter 5, and you can tell that the way MC approaches relationships has changed.
