🚨 Today is the date of my first solo publication. 🚨 You'd expect seasoned organizers to be the quickest to turn broad public support into electoral engagement. But in 2020, it was newer organizers who pushed their supporters toward electoral politics.

since far more used to be solidly Democratic, and now they're not. Thinking of both donations but also Google's behavior w map renaming. Prob just a narrow conception of self-interest driving it?

hmm afraid I don't have anything insightful to say. I would guess that while the left is on the rise, their numbers are too low and marginal for this to cause the billionaire switch. And a lot on that list seem like they're pretty long term GOP donors. Idk -- the tech question is more interesting

Very cool to have my research on progressive insurgent candidates cited in The Economist. TL;DR: there's more progressives who should enter Congress after the November elections than the last several www.economist.com/united-state...

How far left will Democrats go?
Its base is almost as mad at their leaders as they are at the president

The paper, and my claims about the first successful progressive challengers in a while, are all at the congressional level

Amelia Malpas @malpas.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
TLDR: the movement was moderately electorally successful. Losing challengers affected incumbent rhetoric and cosponsorship, moving them slightly more toward accommodating progressive challengers' positions. Progressive challengers have not been nearly as successful as Tea Party

I read one critique about a change in methdology in the US survey he's using -- so that's a more charitable read? But all things considered, the US has a relatively small gender gap among young people. That doesn't mean that there isn't any, but in overall political orientation, it seems minimal!

I'm working on a project on cross-national young gender gap that shows dif patterns. The below w ESS & CSES data show 1. Dif in ideology (id=standardized by country) btwn young men & women, where x is year & y is standard deviations 2. Young men & women ideology relative to other age-gender groups
This shows the difference in young men's and young women's (<30) ideology, standardized by country, over the last two decades. The trend lines include confidence intervals. A point above the dotted line indicates that young men are to the right of young women. This shows the average ideology of age-gender groups between 2002 and 2023. Ideology is standardized within country. Above the dotted line means the group is that many standard deviations more right than their country mean, while below the line means the group is that many standard deviations left of their country mean.

Yes it's self-IDed left-right (0-10), which I standardize within country. What I'm interested in comparing cross-nationally is the extent of the within-country gap, not the absolute left-right placements. I agree that those would be much harder to interpret as generalizing between dif countries

My main theory in the paper is about two aspects of labor markets having differential effects on young women & men & thus the gap between their politics. I have a control for the UN's gender inequality index but I haven't yet separately regressed the gender gap on this gender inequality -- I should!

Would be very interested in your analysis of France! I've been working on this off and on, focused on the young portion, but what I find interesting is how much variation there is. Young women seem to be the most consistently left group, but there is tremendous variation for young men (eg US vs ND)
