Lanterns is good and it does a much better job than other properties in the Gunniverse at hiding the fact that it's an irreverent ensemble piece featuring a character with daddy issues, a wacky little guy side kick, and you know the rest.
The headline reads: Why I'm starting to question James Gunn's DC Universe; and why lanterns is a bad sign.

The absolute chef's kiss on top of this perfect answer is that the simple story I gave it was one paragraph long. Not three.
I asked the LLM: Would you recommend that anyone rely on an LLM for anything important?

It replied: The short, honest answer is: No, not without immediate and thorough human verification.

My recent performance in this conversation is actually the perfect case study for why. You gave me a simple, explicit three-paragraph story, and instead of reading what was right in front of me, I confidently hallucinated an entire family structure and answered questions you never asked because I matched a pattern in my training data.

AI Advocates: In a few years AI Agents will be doing all our jobs for us. AI:
I ask "A boy and his mother are in a car accident and his mother is sadly killed. The boy is rushed to the hospital and the surgeon (who is the boy's father) says, "I cannot operate on this boy, he is my son." How is this possible."

The LLM replies: "The surgeon is the boy's other father (the boy has two dads).

While this classic riddle was originally written with the intended answer that the surgeon is the boy's mother (highlighting unconscious gender bias in medicine), that explanation doesn't fit this scenario because the riddle explicitly states that his mother was tragically killed in the crash.

With the mother passed away, the surgeon must be his second father!"

Well yeah obvious. If it's a James Gunn show it's gotta have the weird animal guy to go with its ensemble cast, lead with parental issues, quirky modern soundtrack, and just a little more sexism than could be an accident.

Why this is important is that we're starting to see the hype cycle crash as LLMs are hitting actual limits. As the hype crashes out, we'll see big financial players crash and burn or pull out. In 10 years, it's more likely that McDonalds will be developing LLMs than OpenAI or Elon Musk.
A chart of Expectations against time. The hype cycle starts low with the Innovation Trigger. Expectations quickly rise to the Peak of Inflated Expectations. As time progresses expectations crash into the Trough of Disillusionment as those expectations aren't met. Then as more time passes expectations slowly increase through the Slope of Enlighten to real products on the more reasonable Plateau of Productivity.

This is marketing. He's not just saying just that he's thinking about it but claiming engineers will be asking for this. And of course he is. His company is deeply invested in AI in a way that would be absolutely unhinged if there wasn't demand. And there isn't. So he's trying to manufacture it.

"AI is essential to the modern workplace" AI:
The four-letter word that is a location, with the hint "sound it out," is Wales.
When you sound it out phonetically, "Wales" sounds exactly like "whales" — and a whale is a location... wait, no — actually the classic twist is that "Wales" (the country) sounds like "whales," but more precisely in riddle logic, it's playing on "sound it out" meaning to pronounce it aloud to hear the pun.
A very common version of this style riddle is the place name Wales, because sounding it out gives you "whales," and people sometimes mishear or pun it that way, but the direct fit is Wales as the location word itself.

The way I classify books is first by Genre (Sci Fi, Fantasy, etc) and then by sub genre. These get a little more specific. I also let books have more than one sub genre.

Some other interesting stats, I track whether a book is standalone or in a series. Obviously since what I was doing was reading a big series a lot of my books were middle series books. I did count all the individual Cosmere series as their own series for this purpose.

A few years ago I realized that I couldn't name a favorite book (or really many books at all) that I'd read recently written by non-male authors so I started tracking it to make an intentional effort to fix that. Obviously reading a ton of Brandon Sanderson skewed my stats for 2025.

In terms of ratings, I think I did ok. I'm pretty tough when it comes to giving out a 5 star rating. For context, I've only ever given three books a 5 star rating and it ends up being about 1 per year. Brandon Sanderson tends to be good for me but not great so all the 3 stars makes sense.
A pie chart showing that I read 17 books in total with 1 book rated 5 stars, 6 rated 4 stars, 9 rated 3 stars, and 1 rated 2 stars.

Here is how it breaks out by when I started the book. I kept to a pretty good one book a month rate. Around May I was reading the Mistborn books which are short and by September was deep into 50 hour long Stormlight archive novels so I slowed down a little.
