would be cool if linked tweets from twitter got displayed more like quote-tweets, without the giant useless X

Sometime people ask me if I'm joking or serious, or kind of 50/50. I like to aim for simultaneously being mostly-joking and mostly-serious.

Hugely in favor of this. Specifically what makes something a twitter afaict is that each utterance is a standalone object that can be amplified & quoted. So anything where comments/replies are stuck to top-level posts is not a twitter.

This is the way because it actually contributes to the decorporitization of language and turns "tweet" into a genericized word, which is an intrinsic linguistic good

so now that twitter is calling itself "X" and its utterances "posts" & "reposts"...... ............can we use "tweet" & "retweet" here? (real question. probably they could still sue, but how hard would it be to prod Elon into insisting those words are stupid and giving others permission...? 🤔)

just created a bsky for my app, which has a new name/domain as of today too celebrated by re-posting this manifesto (that I actually drafted in gdocs but the cadence was already perfect for a thread)

I've existed since 2013 but I have a new name now, just in time for my old name to never have an account on bluesky! Check out the story of why @malcolmocean.com renamed Complice to Intend:

Complice has become Intend
Why I'm renaming my intentionality app business after nearly 9 years.

singular "they" has existed for a long time but (at least in my dialect) was canonically only used for people whose names/identifies don't matter for the conversation ✅ "I asked cashier, they said X" ❌ "I asked Alicia, they said X" the 2nd one would make my grandparents go "what? they who?"

sometimes the blind people touching the elephant are at each others' throats sometimes a sighted person comes along & laughs & explains what's going on sometimes the sighted person assumes that just because they see the WHOLE elephant at once, THEY can see the elephant FULLY 🤦‍♀️🐘

it's hard to be fully expressive around other people because unless you've built up a lot of trust, fully vocalizing your frustration will produce an excess of concern from them that'll be difficult to dispel

most communication problems amount to being unable to reliably say AND mean AND have received/trusted: 1. "I need something" 2. "I'm fine (and I'd let you know if I needed something)" [something], eg:  space  help  to pee/drink/eat  to slow down  to understand  to be understood

In my experience, people trying to wake each other up directly, whatever that means, and no matter how spiritually wise they feel in that moment, tend to be doing it in part out of discomfort with being with the "asleep" person. I've been on both sides of this countless times.

While how I’m feeling is always a response to what’s happening, the size and shape of that response have more to do with my history than the particulars of the situation. Important to honor the role of both the external situation and my internal context of interpretation.

Everyone's basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation & their old emotional meanings. Like dreaming you're at high school but it's also on a boat somehow. & as in dreams, somehow the weirdness of this mashup goes unnoticed

Dream Mashups - Malcolm Ocean
This article is an elaboration on this tweet: Everyone is basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation and whatever old emotional meanings are getting activated by the current situation. Like dreaming you’re at your high school but it’s also on a boat somehow. What makes this metaphor really powerful is that, […]

this famous painting (I've seen it multiple places over the years as a header/background image) is called Wanderer above the Sea of Fog I didn't notice until I read the title that he's looking out from a mountain at a landscape, not from some rocks at a stormy sea

A modest proposal for a scalable distributed community-oriented solution to trust on bsky and beyond. rn the idea is, well, we have these invites, but just pruning the whole invite tree is too messy a solution for trolls. So my proposal: invites are one type of "sponsorship" users can give out.
A screenshot of a figma drawing of a graph of users with edges representing things like "invited", "sponsored" and "reported". The idea is that a given user's local trust score is the sum of the sponsorships/reports that user has earned, weighted by the local trust of the people offering sponsorships/reports.

Average users don't need to know how the backend works. However, they should know: If Twitter were just a server on top of the AT Protocol, then users could switch to the Bluesky server (or any other) without losing their followers/following or posts if they felt that Twitter was being mismanaged.

having confirmed that twitter literally owns the copyright to the word "tweet" (and has done some legal stuff with it before) I want to now turn my attention to what utterances here *should* be called the word "tweet" did magic because it was a new metaphor

had a dream that they had changed "post" to "lut", in the whole UI and then someone wrote a long rant about how CLEARLY they didn't ask anyone in India about this because "lut" is short for "lulut" in Hindi or something which means something bad

conservativism, properly held, has a very humble tone: "we actually don't quite know why what's working is working, so let's be careful as we change it. it's very precious and our wisdom may not be deep enough"

heuristics for finding misplaced items 1. if it's not in the third place I look, look in the first place more thoroughly   eg did I really check all of the pockets of that bag? 2. if it's not in the fifth place I look, question your assumptions   eg maybe it's not in my room at all
