Regarding Azula from Avatar: someone from this blog posited that people's harshness or interest in the character was because of how mature she sounded compared to the other characters. Was that something that was part of the goal for the character? avatar.fandom.com/wiki/User_bl...
The Ba Sing Se Times, Issue 94: 12 January 2025

From the AVATAR FANDOM Wiki:

Why Azula’s Redemption is Such
a Divisive Topic in the Fandom by Austro / FlamesOfKaiya

View Full Image

Few characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender spark as much heated debate as Azula. Discussions about her accountability, her victimhood, and whether she deserves redemption are practically radioactive in the fandom. Why is it so hard to reach common ground on Azula? It boils down to how she’s perceived, both in-universe and by the audience.

Reason 1: Her Character Design Creates a False Sense of Age

Azula is only 14 years old, but her design makes her look significantly older. Her sharp features, lipstick, regal posture, and commanding presence create an illusion of maturity. Compare her to Ty Lee and Mai, her same-age peers, they look like teenagers, while Azula looks like she could be in her late teens or even early 20s. This visual disparity makes it harder for viewers to extend her the same level of grace and sympathy they might offer Zuko, who looks closer to his age and visibly struggles with his inner turmoil.Reason 2: Grey DeLisle’s Voice Performance

Grey DeLisle's masterful voice acting gave Azula an icy, calculated presence. But DeLisle was in her 30s at the time, and her performance carries an adult gravitas that makes Azula’s cold, manipulative lines hit even harder. When Azula speaks, she doesn’t sound like a teenager navigating impossible pressures, she sounds like a seasoned political operative. This auditory maturity makes her actions feel more deliberate and, therefore, less forgivable to some viewers.

Someone reposted this infamous passage from the late film critic Roger Ebert in response to someone calling for a boycott of the new Resident Evil movie. Feels more relevant today since it was first said 17 years ago.
A snapshot of a quote from Roger Ebert that can be found on Goodreads.

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1192222-a-lot-of-fans-are-basically-fans-of-fandom-itself

This was originally from his review of the 2009 documentary Fanboys, which was collected in a series of reviews for the book "A Horrible Experience of Unbearable Length: More Movies That Suck". It says as follows:

A lot of fans are basically fans of fandom itself. It's all about them. They have mastered the Star Wars or Star Trek universes or whatever, but their objects of veneration are useful mainly as a backdrop to their own devotion. Anyone who would camp out in a tent on the sidewalk for weeks in order to be first in line for a movie is more into camping on the sidewalk than movies. Extreme fandom may serve as a security blanket for the socially inept, who use its extreme structure as a substitute for social skills. If you are Luke Skywalker and she is Princess Leia, you already know what to say to each other, which is so much safer than having to ad-lib it. Your fannish obsession is your beard. If you know absolutely all the trivia about your cubbyhole of pop culture, it saves you from having to know anything about anything else. That's why it's excruciatingly boring to talk to such people: They're always asking you questions they know the answer to.

Animal lover A common characteristic in fairy tales' princesses and one that easily applies to both Rose/Pink and Steven. Even so, In "Change Your Mind", when Pink saves the rainbow worms from the Kyanite colony, it is a reference to Jasmine freeing all the birds in Aladdin.

now
like if you ever responded to people going "why doesn't steven universe simply kill the bad guys" with "it's a show for children, they can't kill people" instead of "it wouldn't fit the tone and message of the show" than i don't think you're allowed to make fun of the cartoon fans who think adventure time should of aired in adult swim instead, cause like the precedent you set actually.

A lot of this can be chalked up to the fact that in terms of presenting themselves and/or how it’s talked about, queerness is seen as a white thing. It’s no one specific group‘s fault, but this quote from James Baldwin comes to mind.
“Go the Way Your Blood Beats”: An Interview with James Baldwin by Richard Goldstein, originally published in The Village Voice (June 26, 1984), republished in James Baldwin: The Last Interview and Other Conversations (2014)

GOLDSTEIN: Do black gay people have the same sense of be-ing separate as white gay people do? I mean, I feel distinct from other white people. BALDWIN: Well, that I think is because you are penalized, as it were, unjustly; you're placed outside a certain safety to which you think you were born. A black gay person who is a sexual conundrum to society is already, long before the question of sexuality comes into it, menaced and marked because he's black or she's black. The sexual question comes after the question of color; it's simply one more aspect of the danger in which all black people live. I think white gay people feel cheated because they were born, in principle, into a society in which they were supposed to be safe. The anomaly of their sexuality puts them in danger, unexpectedly. Their reaction seems to me in direct proportion to the sense of feeling cheated of the advantages which accrue to white people in a white society. There's an element, it has always seemed to me, of bewilderment and complaint. Now that may sound very harsh, but the gay world as such is no more prepared to accept black people than anywhere else in society. It's a very hermetically sealed world with very unattractive features, including racism.

Feels like a good time to pull out this quote from the 2nd Steven Universe artbook (3rd if you count the one made for movie).
I started to think about all the hero stories where the climax is a fight - fighting for what you believe in. These stories never really grapple with the fact that being infight is really unhealthy for a person; even when you win. I feel like if you grow up watching movies, you might think that there's nothing better in the world than being in a fight and winning, but being in a fight can be really difficult for you physically, emotionally, and developmentally. Steven's been through a lot, and he came out victorious, but he took a lot of damage."

One joy for me in watching series like this (and reading Zerocalcare's comic work down the line) is that you get to see a non-American comment on the media they consumed and how it shaped them as a person. For example: as mentioned in the clip, these are the role models he lists.
From the first episode of "My Two Cents", "Due spicci di valori":

A parody of Mount Rushmore showcasing the people and characters Italian cartoonist Michele "Zerocalcare" Rech considered role models growing up.

Going clockwise from the top:

- Master Yoda from the Star Wars movies

- Nelson Mandela, the deceased anti-apartheid revolutionary and 1st officially elected president of South Africa

- Max Pezzali, used to be an iconic figure for Italian youths between the 1990s and late 2000s, since the lyrics of his songs were able to resonate very well with them. 883 songs are also used among the soundtrack of Zerocalcare's show.

- Zero's mother, typically represented as a mother hen in his work

- Zero's father. Like his mother, he is also drawn as an animal, this time a goose.

- Kenshiro from the anime series Fist of the North Star (known as "Ken il guerriero" in Italy

- Dragon Shiryu from the anime series Saint Seiya (known as "I Cavalieri dello zodiaco" in Italy)

A scene in the first episode of the Italian adult animated series "My 2 Cents/Due Spicci" made me think back to this. Our protagonist, Zerocalcare, was raised on many female-led anime just like and including Candy Candy during the 80s in Italy...with the exception of one.

The King of the Hill revival succeeds where the Proud Family revival failed miserably.

It would be very helpful to see you elaborate considering that both are aimed at different age demographics and still critically well received.

I’m reminded of what I said about the student film that got some backlash last year “Angelic Kitty Miracle Limit-Chan”, in a review/analysis piece I have yet to put up.
Someone on BlueSky was asking “when are we going to get positive films about trans people relationship with anime and manga? They’ve been in the western world for 40 years now”

While we agreed that type of story is best found elsewhere (like visual novels), I think people take for granted the environment one consumes media in. As long as people watch and consume anime through the Internet, the “anime is brainrot” mindset will always be a popular thought, even by those who love it.Student film poster for a misunderstood film.

It’s mildly amusing how some political cartoonists weren’t even waiting for Mitch McConnell to croak, only for Lindsey Graham to do it first.

Art I commissioned from the talented @smileyjuiice.bsky.social at the start of the year of me with Sarah Suffrage. They nailed the Schoolhouse Rock look. Never got into this aspect of fandom, so I had to overcome "cringe" and make judgement calls. Happy belated-4th of July. #yumeship #selfship
Selfship art of Malcolm Rambert and Sarah Suffrage from the the Schoolhouse Rock short, Sufferin' Till Suffrage, making out with their eyes closed.

Malcolm is holding a sign that says "# BLACK LIVES MATTER" while wearing a Pan-African themed American flag tank top and a flower cap. Sarah has a ponytail and is wearing her usual attire of red pants and a blue shirt with a white star on it.

To their left is a drag queen covered in Red, white and blue, holding a sign that says "SUPPORT THE DOLLS".

There is also graffiti on the wall that says "NO KINGS" and "ACAB".
