So, just to be clear, the Republican president in the 1980s was able to leap over state government, and empower localities and county government, because he is a magic dragon who could make state government cease to exist

Well, which is it? Did they take away local rule, or give back too much of it? You know, the states have state and city governments that you can vote for. I know some Democrats are occasionally surprised to learn this

"disempowering local rule?" That's...not a thing that happened. If anything, Reaganism gave back *too* much power to states, in the name of smaller government

Yes, I should’ve shared your view on politics back when you were hyperventilating about George Bush being a fascist; that would’ve made you happy but it would’ve made both you and me wrong

Not at all. I stated so in my reply. The topic was fascism and Tom seemed to imply that since the Dems had been in power they could have done something to prevent this from happening. They supported neo-liberalism, a contributing factor, but they could not have prevented the GOP’s fascist turn.

Why? You really think the rot in the system is limited to one party? That Dems don’t have their own factions that have authoritarian streaks in them? That Dems haven’t shown disdain for basic rights in their history?

Hmmm, yes Democrats, from Clinton, followed neo-liberal economic policies. And it’s true those policies have been perverted to aid the concentration of wealth and power which can be a contributing factor to fascism. Buuut to suggest that Dems are at fault for the current fascist trend is a stretch.

Some of these people firmly believe that Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden were basically just clones of Reagan. To them, Nancy Pelosi is just a female Newt Gingrich, Chuck Schumer=Mitch McConnell, and Elizabeth Warren is more or less the same as Rand Paul. The political fringes are nuts.

That's what I think many of those older conservatists didn't account for: they were laser focused on seeing slippery slopes in one direction (the left) that they ignored the slope that was forming on their side, leaving them understandably shocked and horrified when rock bottom began to materialize.

Downside: The US now has government goon squads, and deploys them to try to intimidate voters into voting the way the president wants. Upside: They don’t have nearly enough goons. Not even close. They’re hoping fear will make up for that big shortfall, but it won’t.

I mourn the loss of the innocent who died (or were injured) from the attack on Oct 7. But I also mourn the loss of the innocent in Gaza, both from the evilness of Hamas but also the actions of the Israeli government. All of loss of innocent lives should be mourned equally.

Think about how much control you as an American citizen have over the everyday actions taken by our own government. So why do you blame Jewish Americans for things being done by a country that they don’t live in and aren’t citizens of? Again, where is the logic? It doesn’t make sense.

On the other side, a lot of people have issues with actions and policies of the current government of Israel. You know what Bibi Netanyahu DOESN’T do at any point in time? He doesn’t call America to ask Jacob from State Farm what he thinks he should do on any given day about any issue.

“I don’t like terrorists” says a bigot as they explain their hatred of Muslims. The worst terrorist attack in American history was committed by 19 terrorists from other countries. This country is home to 4.5 million Muslim Americans who had absolutely nothing to do with it. It’s irrational.

From the time I was a child, I never understood the hatred of Jewish people. Like conceptually. I abhorred hating people based on the color of their skin. But at least I understood the basic concept. I didn’t even know that a fair percentage of my Jewish friends were Jewish until they told me.

It doesn’t seem like there are enough people in society who despise BOTH Antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry. Like, why is it hard for some people to not be a jackass to either group? You don’t have to pick a side to hate. You really don’t.

It's Trump so who cares. I get it. But here's why it bothers me. We don't need more fuel poured on the fire. We don't need Americans thinking that Trump wants them nuked when that is so obviously NOT what he was saying. It is only further coarsening the discourse, if that's possible.
