Love a good {partial} solar eclipse, even more so a solar eclipse sunset, and then topped off with the Perseid meteor shower. By eye Astronomy at its finest.

Annual leave = balm for the soul as it described in German.
Digital drawing showing a big blue sky with some white fluffy clouds and a hint of sun glare in the top left corner. Underneath, the sea with a ship wreck in the foreground, in the background a modern container ship, an oil rig and an offshore wind farm. The sea has tones of blue in the background, green in the middle and increasingly sandy colour
towards the foreground. Digital drawing with visible brush strokes. Rolling hills with some woodlands in the background, some single trees, some bushes along a field path. Wildflowers of varying colours are sprinkled throughout the frame. The sky is blue with some white clouds.

I knew about pixels and voxels but was today introduced to spaxels: A spaxel (spatial pixel) is the smallest spatial element in an integral field spectroscopy dataset, representing a specific position on the sky with an associated spectrum. Taken from Maggie Aderin-Pocock‘s book WEBB‘S UNIVERSE

The model does the heavy lifting sifting through a massive haystack of needles and less identified events need to be checked by the human in the loop. #CD7-UGM there are some patterns to be recognised within the populations of false positives. But also, what is truly binary in biology?

Marie Held @makaefer.bsky.social · 24/04/2025
Manual annotation is time consuming and not feasible for high throughput. Fluorescent probes also have negative side effects, mo channels mo problems. Also a lot of drugs are {highly} fluorescent. #CD7-UGM AI to scale up rare event detection? Also scalable and sustainable? A big task…

Controls are important. And prove that the trained models are distinguishing dying and proliferating cells. #CD7-UGM Comparing imaging to standard assays shows that imaging is faster, has more functionally relevant readout, I.e. dying cells can also be imaged.
