It says less about Anthropic that he left in a huff than that people like that consistently get hired there.

Is it a real problem though? Talking about the importance of controlling the debt while actually letting the debt explode has worked pretty well for them for many years. Electorally, I mean. Obviously it's terrible policy.

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

I think the opposition is weak and vibes-based and only exploitable if you concede the point from the go. Clear messaging all the way and it will be fine. Now, let me take a sip from this hot beverage and check what Labour's track record is with clear consistent messaging.

Trying to shape any deal to appease them is pointless. You can either get it done despite them, on the regular terms, or you can't. That's politics. And the regular terms, including freedom of movement, Schengen, and single currency, are fine. Sell to the 70+% who are reachable, not the nutters.

Yes the people who think another luxury package of opt outs will be offered are delusional. I don't think it's actually a big deal. Basically there's a faction, call it 20% ± x, that will be rabidly against joining no matter what. They will make up reasons if there aren't any.

Maik Zumstrull @maik.zumstrull.net · 01/10/2026
The obligation to join the single currency doesn't have an enforceable deadline. So Sweden and a few others just have to say “It's fine, we'll get around to it eventually” but not actually do anything to advance it.

Germany's AfD was initially a single issue bring back the Mark party. They pivoted to immigration when it turned out nobody cares.

The wild thing is that the owners are pretty much intentionally burning it to the ground because they've somehow convinced themselves that "make 1000% or higher profit margins and everyone loves you for doing it" is a shitty business model and they can do better.

But the first thing that people trying to defend the (insane) British system will go on about is the "constituency link". Which is not a thing! Not even on paper. No one is even asking you to have ever visited the place.

Maik Zumstrull @maik.zumstrull.net · 22/09/2026
Such a weird quirk that MPs or candidates are not required to live in the constituency they want to represent. Now, such requirements are typically easy to cheat where they exist – just rent a small flat, register, and never go there.

Merkel's total refusal to ever acknowledge a problem or try to fix anything is kind of radical in her own way. But that's very different from actively working towards a totalitarian fascist takeover.

The "resend bounce" phrasing might mean they try via Mailgun and/or Cloudflare, and if it gets rejected as spam (because it is) they retry with SES on a subdomain?

Maik Zumstrull @maik.zumstrull.net · 16/09/2026
Yes definitely shenanigans. The SPF for ilands[.]app has Cloudflare and Mailgun, so I assumed the bulk mail would be Mailgun. Your sample was routed through a subdomain, resend-bounce.ilands[.]app, which has Amazon SES in SPF.

Did you ask Mailgun (their outbound email hosting provider) for comment? I'm a little surprised they're not kicking this off their platform, if it's this blatantly abusive.

I quite like “runs at least twice per hour until at least midnight” as a baseline definition of a real transit line. It's a useful level of service, not an unreasonable demand for more budget constrained systems, and excludes nonsense once-a-day vanity lines.

You're also wasting more than half of the depth, unless you have it positioned as a room divider and put books in from both sides. That said I do have some books in mine. Not space efficient but otherwise fine. Looks okay, too.

Anecdotally, I've noticed that people who tell me they find navigation “doesn't really work” never look at the screen. Which you should, a map view is often so much less ambiguous than the voice message. (And that's why you want the screen somewhere on the dash, not down by the center console.)

The constitution also has a lot of very tight restrictions on state abuse of power. A lot depends on if courts will be willing to do their job. If they go Trump style – maximalist interpretation of any powers granted, decide the text is just kidding about any restrictions – dark times ahead.

2) and 3) are intimately linked, in that the BBC (the organisation that really matters in the modern environment) treats 'claims by rival parties' as the operating frame for how it covers everything. The failure from Labour and the Conservatives to say 'this stuff is bad' is really, really bad.

But saying stuff that is technically true, just totally irrelevant, has become a favorite disinfo tool. Partly because it short-circuits fact checking as a countermeasure.

Also it's a solar panel. You put it on the roof. You don't sprinkle it over your cereal in the morning. Even if there is arsenic or whatever safely sealed up inside the thing, it doesn't matter.

Very funny case of economist brain; his argument is, basically: But if you ban this, people can't do it anymore! Surely an unintended side effect of the policy? Here's the thing though: they banned it because they don't want people doing it. That's the policy.

Preventing even one hospitalization for a CV event pays for quite a few £400 shots.

Maik Zumstrull @maik.zumstrull.net · 26/08/2026
A lot of health systems around the world are really reluctant to pay for this shot; at minimum, it's usually age gated. If this link is confirmed, the reduction in CV issues alone would probably financially justify giving it to everyone, before even taking into account the shingles savings.

And the weaselly wording of “a more generous offer on Youth Mobility” sounds to me like they're saying, we think we can get those big concessions for only pretending to agree to YM, but still stopping short of actually signing up. Guys. Grow up.

Maik Zumstrull @maik.zumstrull.net · 26/08/2026
The first paragraph quoted is particularly delusional. Brussels has been clear that Youth Mobility is the minimum they need to see just to show the UK is finally willing to have an adult conversation. There are no concessions to be had “in exchange” for YM. It's just the ticket to get in the door.

Misplaced how? If there's a lie in the headline, I don't think that's okay if there's a correction many paragraphs in. If the headline is an insane take, I don't think that's okay if you rephrase it in a more nuanced way later. You can just not do either of these.

You keep conflating "despite the restrictions, MV3 ad blockers mostly still work" with "people are lying about there being restrictions in Chrome". "If you wish to use uBlock Origin with all intended features fully available, you can't use Chrome" is a correct sentence.

A pet peeve of mine about the "entitled" language is that big tech aggressively advertised these perks when hiring, and IMO workers are in the most literal sense of the word entitled to things they were expressly promised when recruited.
