I (ok, Gemini) made a Google Map (zoom-able) with all the areas of the USA highlighted in Red where DHS/ICE/CBP are allowed (currently, unless SCOTUS rules otherwise) to stop you with no suspicion of wrongdoing or warrant and search your electronic devices: mattlinton.com/constitution...

If you're one of the majority of men who aren't all men this week, one place that might be good to support is "Futures Without Violence" who have an extremely highly-rated program called "Coaching Boys Into Men" that has actual study-backed positive effects at teaching adolescent boys about consent.

Every government and big business who insists on "sovereign" cloud data where the data stays geographically in their country should look at this and understand that you're demanding a cloud with less reliability.

Do they make a fitbit/smartwatch yet that can tell you're stressing out and start buzzing to remind you to breathe deeply and pet a dog for a few minutes? I'd buy one for each wrist.

I was invited to a very fancy restaurant yesterday for dinner, and I think I now understand why rich people still seem to be so unhappy. Dessert was one square inch of cake, with gold leaf on it. And everyone had to pretend that they were super happy about that.

Every time I'm listening to YouTube Music on random and an AI-generated song pops up, I get the creepy feeling that I'm experiencing the versificator from 1984 in action. I love being able to code faster but I could do without uncanny-valley machine generated covers of 80s hits.

I applaud sites/services who try to go "Passwordless" for security reasons but PLEASE, I'm begging y'all: Stop going passwordless with "We'll email/text you a sign-in confirmation every time you sign in". This adds a bunch of useless friction to an already-solved problem!

These 8-story structures with commercial space on the bottom and 6 to 7 stories of housing on top, built near light rail and train stations, are an EXCELLENT responsible housing growth plan for cities in the SF Bay area. We should see more of it.

I've discovered that I am a sucker for videos where a musician's kid plays their work (and on their instrument!). Shane Hawkins at his dad's memorial, Jason Bonham @ Kennedy center, Lukas Nelson, etc. I love these performances <3

I just gently handled a Byrna pepper ball which got too old and had a teeeny bit of the powder seep out a crack and onto the ball. I am now coughing, snotty, and sneezing. Would hate to have a cloud of this stuff in my face.

Last night a human driver ran over & killed a person in a clearly marked crosswalk in my town, while that person had a walk signal. It would be good if this person's death was as meaningful to the "ban waymos!" Community as the hypothetical risk of someone being hurt in the future.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think the primary reason it is now socially accepted that people will shove their phone in your face and record you for anything and everything, is that it's very socially unacceptable for people to slap the phone out of your hand for doing it.

The year is 2032. AI escaped containment and became self-aware. Despite our best efforts, humanity has been all but extinguished. The computers reign. Finally, after all these years - it's the year of Linux on the desktop.

Assume that technology has made it possible to eradicate all mosquitoes. 100% - but we don't really know what the ecological impact will be down the line. Should we do it?

This article touched on one of my fav topics (incident playbooks) but I had way more words than will fit here, so I wrote them down in long-form. TLDR: I think "Create a playbook for every possible incident" is overkill. Playbooks have a place, but also limits. More: mattlinton.com/blog/playboo...

A thing that so many internet-freedom advocates fail to effectively convey when we oppose age verification laws, social media bans, and the like: "Protect the children" includes protecting them from things that a future government may want to do to harm them when they're adults.

Honestly, Volunteering is HIGHLY under-rated. Especially as you get older. In my own case, It's much harder for a man in his 40s to make new friends (as compared to the college years) but when I rejoined a volunteer fire department I greatly expanded my friend-network in my local community.

I am willing to buy into the idea that AI-generated creations, if done well &appreciated by the beholder, may be art. But I *really* need YouTube to start forcing AI-generated music to be labeled as such so I can filter out the billion AI-cover-uploads that now pollute my feed.

This one is a great regulation. The main reason robocars are better drivers than humans is that they can have more senses than humans, which work better and faster than ours. "Camera only because humans only have eyes and we do fine" was really dumb.

"People want software that has NO bugs, is that too much to ask?" My friend, you're not even eating FOOD with no bugs, almost every food you can buy has an FDA-approved maximum amount of insect parts it can contain before it's considered 'too many insects'.

Even golf course irrigation is absolutely dwarfed by how much water we use for Americans to have a HEAVILY meat-centric diet. If you "Fully load" the water usage for datacenters to include both cooling and electricity generation, meat production still uses 72x more water.

We (liberals, Elon critics) are being silly when we make this claim. Elon asked for a plan to "end world hunger". The UN provided a plan to feed the hungry for one year. That's an extremely excellent use of$6B but in a year the core problems would still exist. Nothing would have ended.

I ordered some items on instacart and the shopper marked the delivery "Complete" - but it wasn't there. The photo they povided for "delivery location" is a photo of the garage door taken straight from Google Street View. Are they hoping I'll assume it got stolen & not report it?

If you're worried about water usage by datacenters, maybe also consider a more vegetarian-leaning diet? Producing one beef ravioli (10g) uses about 130L of water. 10g of beans uses ~50L. Going veggie for one dinner can ecologically offset about 2 billion Gemini tokens!

The whole "datacenters in space" conversation reminds me of talk about colonizing mars. It's a thing we COULD do, but is vastly more expensive than taking better care of the planet we've got. The only advantage is nobody owns space yet, so you don't have to cooperate with others.

I tried using Gemini to write a script this morning to back up Google Photos _incrementally_ once a month instead of doing a 1.2TB google takeout (and downloading 19 50GB files via a browser). It hasn't gone well. Looks like the needed APIs don't exist. :(

I think it is universal to the human condition for people to blow off steam on their own employer around the break room table, and no one should be shocked by this. If people knew what medics said to one another to cope with their job stress folks would riot; tech memes are tame by comparison.

Preach it, Gemini. Today I'd like to thank Chase bank for sending me a real email from a secondary subdomain asking me to visit their site and enter in banking, routing, and account information - exactly the things security awareness notifications say they'll never do.

I can't emphasize enough about how important it is for cybersecurity/tech folks to have an enjoyable hobby outside of tech (a physical one, if possible). It's amazing how one good solid firefighting drill day (or call!) improves my mood and attitude for _days_ afterward.

I have to say, gemini-cli makes catching up to technical debt (such as upgrading my personal colo box several OS versions in one go) SO much easier. Today's post-upgrade prompt, and its output. "Fix all problems found" is next, and then things are good to go.

Hey DFIR Friends! Are you near/in Boulder CO, or interested in moving there? Do you want to use and refine your large-scale incident response skills while protecting one of the largest and most complex networks on the planet? Good news - I'm hiring. :D
google.com
Security Engineer III, Security Response
There's no such thing as a "safe system" - only safer systems. Our Security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google's users and developers. As a Security Engineer, you help protect network boundaries, keep computer systems and network devices hardened against attacks and provide security services to protect highly sensitive data like passwords and customer information. Security Engineers work directly with network equipment and actively monitor our systems for attacks and intrusions. You also work with software engineers to proactively identify and fix security flaws and vulnerabilities. You use your industry experience to own and drive the resolution of complex security incidents, policy questions and technical security issues. Google’s “Detection and Response” team finds and responds to threats 24/7 across 3 regions. In Security Response, you will be a member of our global on-call response team and use the broad security experience and Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) - specific domain knowledge to investigate and respond to escalations from across Alphabet. Security Response team members train and grow in broad forensic investigation and crisis management skills, but specialize in one or the other as their career grows. As an Incident Management (IM) specialist, you will use professional emergency management procedures to lead teams of engineers, lawyers, executives and others toward fast, effective responses to any situation and quickly mitigate and resolve security incidents. You will also assist in technical assessments of security issues alongside other Security Engineers as necessary. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Learn more about benefits at Google.
