if the author didn’t namedrop doja cat and acknowledge the death of the monoculture I’d assume rolling stone had thawed out some frozen 90s guy who’d just learned about classism and told him there’s a country song that people are saying they’ve never heard of

seeing this for the second time on my timeline I finally sought the article out and yeah it 100% feels like it’s written by someone still trying to live in a world that does not meaningfully exist anymore

they're cosmetic items. for a single-player game. NO ONE BUT ME IS EVER GOING TO SEE THEM! WHY DO I EVEN CARE

I hate that control resonant has twitch drops because I hate twitch drops because I don't watch streamers because why would I want to watch a stranger play video games, but I hate even more that I'm a sucker who got FOMO'd into "watching" a stream muted & minimized in order to get those twitch drops

also love too only really need glasses because of the astigmatism. granted I am around the age where presbyopia starts to set in but my uncorrected vision is still 20/25 so my glasses are basically just reading glasses but for astigmatism

love too have different degrees of astigmatism in each eye so every time I get new glasses every rectangle becomes a trapezoid until I acclimate to the new prescription

this is in iOS 27. could nature be healing? are Easter eggs returning to software? (probably not at least to the first one, I don’t think we’re un-ringing the “computers woven into the very fabric of our lives” bell)

I was bitching about this on discord and someone pointed out that it displays what it thinks it heard so you can trivially verify whether it heard you correctly as long as you can read text on a screen which okay sure but that is SO not the point

Alex I. Thymia @maia.computer · 28/08/2026
has outsourcing your thinking to stochastic text generators destroyed your capacity for independent thought and now your stochastic text generator is refusing to order a pizza for you? Papa John’s AI pizza assistant can help!
Suggested uses of Papa John’s “AI pizza assistant”, “Lou AI”:

- “Family night: ‘Order dinner for family & friends’”
- “Ordering for vegetarians? ‘Help me create a meat-free order’”Suggested uses of Papa John’s “AI pizza assistant”, “Lou AI”:

- “Pizza party: ‘I need to feed a group of kids’”
- “Order on a budget: ‘Build an order that fits my price range’”

Alex I. Thymia @maia.computer · 28/08/2026
thank god we have AI so now we can recreate the experience of having to wonder whether your pizza order was heard, understood, and entered correctly without the inconvenience of a human being on the other end
Screenshot of the Papa John’s app inviting me to “tell Lou AI my order, and we’ll build it for you and apply any available deals”

apparently you don’t even have to do anything cool to get your own combo at Dunkin, just being an “influencer” is enough

I have no illusions that I am or ever was meaningfully in touch with popular culture but few things drive that notion home harder than fast food collaborations with people I have to google to find out who they are, like this at Dunkin

plus like I’d argue that vampire survivors isn’t “self-playing” like idle clicker games are, and even those do require some manual play to get to the point where they play themselves. this whole article really just feels like the author complaining that games they don’t personally like exist

I was actually going to read to the end to see if the article somehow redeemed itself, only to find out that it’s paywalled, so I’m just going to assume it’s fishing for people to subscribe to hate-read the rest of it

maybe YOU refuse but I would enjoy making temperatures seem much more grandiose by using metric prefixes. what sounds hotter, 105 degrees Fahrenheit or 405.6 decidegrees Celsius? or, for that matter, 313706 millikelvin?

which must be even too nuanced for us given how most things that use it seem to treat anything less than five stars as an abjectly and irredeemably negative rating

I feel like a hypocrite because I find pandering nerd-"culture" mashups to be eyeroll-worthy at best but at the same time I also think shit like danny dorito is hilarious, even though it's ultimately not especially different in spirit
An illustration of a Nacho Cheese Dorito with Danny Devito's face. The illustration also features a couple of abstract triangular shapes reminiscent but not identical to the current Doritos logo, and the text "DANNY DORITO" below the Danny Dorito in a font resembling the font used in the Doritos wordmark.

5 words from my birth year (1983) that describe my vibe beta test cryptid cyberpunk gender transition information superhighway it is legitimately hilarious to me that there are a bunch of tech terms AS WELL AS “gender transition” and “gender nonconforming” first recorded the year I was born

hot take: we fucked up when we let computers get so important to society that developers had to stop putting easter eggs into software because they were seen as unprofessional and untrustworthy

chitter and chirrup at me with all the indignation you can muster, cat, but you’ll live. there’s plenty of other places to lay in the house. sorry if they’re not as satisfying because they’re not precisely as wide as your body. but again, you’ll live

like, sorry I don’t want to shut you in this room because I can’t keep the door open if I leave for more than a minute or else your big dumb idiot Maine coon brother might decide to come graze on some of the black spaghetti dangling under my desk and your mom will kill me if he electrocutes himself

it occurs to me that I kind of glossed over the fact that you will have to sacrifice some other key, like caps lock or a modifier key that you don't use as much, for this, since PC keyboards don't natively have Compose keys

Alex I. Thymia @maia.computer · 09/07/2026
most if not all Linux desktop environments have the concept of a “Compose” key, inherited (I think) from old commercial Unix workstations. basically you hit compose, type a key sequence, get a character that you don’t have a key for. like Compose 'a is á, Compose o/ is ø, and Compose -- is —

Alex I. Thymia @maia.computer · 09/07/2026
yeah. I think it comes more from our self-mythology around being a “nation of immigrants” and all that. in fact, many of the original 13 colonies actively solicited for immigrants to move here—Massachusetts and Pennsylvania are two that spring immediately to mind

I feel like bill watterson probably has already used the internet, and it was probably only for about 15 minutes, until he saw something that made him react like cornelius in this achewood strip. watterson probably used a baseball bat or a golf club instead of a cricket bat though
the Achewood strip from December 7, 2007, "Philippe's king equipment", in which Philippe is wearing a very monarchical getup including a genuine ermine robe, the money for which he got by naively corresponding with a pervert. upon learning this, Cornelius's reaction is to smash the computer with a cricket bat

you’ve just given me a flashback to the time I saw a bald guy wearing a neck gaiter that was close enough to his skin tone that he did genuinely look like an ambulatory uncircumcised penis. I still wonder whether he did it intentionally, or accidentally and somehow no one ever pointed it out to him
