5. They continue to act as if government issued currency is scarce. As are result we have currency issuing governments pursuing ‘balanced budget’ policies or worse still, striving to run a surplus (i.e, a policy that removes money form the non-government sector).

Neoliberals want to cut social security, silent on subsidies to banks. Since 2006, Bank of England has paid interest on central bank reserve deposits to commercial banks. The EU & the Swiss stopped similar practice in 2023. UK still paying, £100bn in last 3 yrs. There are better uses of £100bn.

In July 2026, median pay of a UK employee was £31,704, take home £26,346. Single person needs to earn £30,500 a year to reach a minimum standard of living. A couple with 2 children needs £74,000. 25.3m Britons live below minimum standard. 1% have more wealth than 70% of the population combined.

The sheer economic illiteracy of commenters is depressing. Where do they think the ‘borrowed’ money came from in the first place. Do they hold bonds? Premium bonds? NS & I savings acct? They’re all part of the national debt. Do they want it repaid to them?

EU fiscal rules are political choices, not economic laws. The SGP, debt brakes, and ESM conditionality are real constraints; but they exist because member states chose them. That same political will can create exceptions, suspend rules, or rewrite them. #MMT #economics #EU

That North Sea oil is not going to make UK petrol even a ha'penny cheaper. Or alleviate a shortage in the UK the next time Hormuz closes. On the other hand, wil this slow Britains greenification? If not, then this does not hurt. It will calm down de dumber petrolheads. If that helps, OK.

Double entry bookkeeping ensures that books always balance. With national debt at 270% of GDP, UK launched the welfare state and rebuilt economy and society. It brought prosperity. Govt created money to bailout banks. It can do the same to rebuild economy

Average UK renter spent 41% of take-home pay on rent. Rocketing costs of energy, water, food, essentials. Real average wage unchanged since 2008. Median take-home pay £26,208. 39% of Briton have £1,000 or less in savings. Can't get economic growth without curbing profiteering, ending poverty.
