The U.N. confirms what we all already knew: the Trump admin targeted a girls school and killed 178 civilians, most of whom were girls — and it was an action catalyzed by preventable negligence. God help us. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/17/w...

U.S. Strike on Iranian School May Have Been War Crime, U.N. Report Says
Mistakes that led to the deaths of more than a hundred children “went beyond negligence,” investigators said. They also cited a separate strike the same day that killed a reported 22 civilians.

What might Britain look like in 200 years, if the alt-right win? I've just written my debut novel! #booksky #books #writing #racism #history
A good while later, they heard footsteps, and then a thin, sour-faced woman with thin, sour lips stood before them, her hands spanning her apron, red with lye burns.

“This him?” the woman had said, blinking at Tolan. “That washerwoman said he was fair-skinned. Looks dark enough to be an intruder, to me.” Tolan flushed red, hot with shame and disappointment. He wasn’t of intruder stock, although he must look so here, up where the classes never mingled, and no one had shameful blood or parentage. He had always tanned dark in the summer, enough to frighten his mother into insisting he stayed in during the holidays, much to his frustration. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he furiously pulled his cap down over his face, wishing both women would disappear and leave him to climb up in the trees by the gate and sob where no one could see.

“He’s fair-skinned alright, just too fond of playing out in the sun,” Ma had responded, smacking him disapprovingly on the back of the head. “And his father was three-quarters Saxon, so think on that. He’s almost one of your lot, to be sure, Matilda.” Matilda. He wondered how Ma knew her name. The thin woman squinted, pulling Tolan’s cap roughly from his head to reveal a mass of dirty blonde tufts.

“Well, the hair is Saxon,” she agreed, begrudgingly, “But I’d wager that last quarter is some filthy savage blood. Always the way with these simple, rough boys who can’t sit still or pay attention. Not in their nature, poor little mites.”

“I can sit still,” Tolan protested. “And pay attention. I’ll be good, I promise.”

“Your Ma,” the woman said, sternly, “says that you are a decent, patriotic boy.”

“I am,” Tolan said, enthusiastically. “I go to all of the marches, and I love the national films. I’m going to be a soldier when I grow up and defend the homeland from intruders.” He paused, for his mother had kicked him in the back of his shin. “But gardening is fine. I want to do that. That’s fine too.”

#poetry #politics The Gull
High on a copse in an old elm tree,
Where the clouds swelled high and the birds sang free;
Lived the magpies black and the magpies white,
and all watched The skies as day turned night.

When a storm comes hard
And the gales shriek low
And the lightening strikes and the boughs do bow;
We will all surely die! How our nests they will fall
And there will be no singing, not ever, not at all.

And they sat and they trembled
And they wept and they fought
At the terrible imaginings of
That terrifying thought.

Whatever can be done, whatever shall we do?
We are helpless at the fury
At the storm when it comes through.
In the yellow light of morning
When all was still and dull
 Came down upon the branches
A great and feathered gull.

I heard your lowly shriekings
And the terror of your young,
From the storm I shall protect you,
If your song for me is sung. When seven days had been and gone
A storm had not been seen
And all the merry magpies
Danced in grateful glee.
You have saved us, cried the magpies
And you will be our king
For you alone can stop this wicked
Storm from happening!

To disobey my order
Said the gull with hungry gaze
Would cause the greatest storm
And inspire the greatest rage.
So to me you must bring your young
And on them I will feast
Indeed, to disobey me would
Incur the greatest beast.

When seven days and been and gone,
And all the young were bones
All the magpies trembled
At the gull upon the throne.
If you wish to surely save yourselves,
You must let me eat you too
Oh I can hear the storm it comes
And it will here pass through!

The image displays a serene landscape at Sakuranosato Park in Mie Prefecture, Japan, where several cherry blossom trees in full, pale-pink bloom are positioned along a grassy, sloping bank.
