The underlying goal of genAI is to let those with ridiculous amount of money to profit from human creativity and skill without having to pay those who are actually creative and skilled.

One thing I look forward to on summer nights is seeing fireflies. ✨ (Artwork by Braeden Raymer)
Illustration of a mason jar on a patch of grass filled with glowing yellow dots (representing fireflies). Some rise to form the word “Indiana” in cursive handwriting. Below is “Light of the Midwest” in black-coloured text. At the bottom is a small circular emblem with a firefly and the text “United State of Indiana” around it.

You are supposed to be triggered when someone mistreats, lies to, or disrespects you. You can heal to lessen the intensity of that trigger, but having a reaction to poor treatment means your body is alive, alert, and reminding you that you deserve better.

Today I found “treehouse echoes” on Apple Music. Normally, I’d be excited to find new music, but with the current state of things, I was worried it was AI-generated. To my relief, I learned it was created by Andrew Gialanella. 😮‍💨

It was in the low 20s (20-23°C) yesterday, sunny and super windy. 🌞🍂🌬️ Today, it’s in the negatives (-5°C), snowy and still windy. 🌨️🥶🌬️ The wind has been so strong lately that the howling can be heard clearly indoors, and it feels eerie and unsettling, like I’m in a horror film.

#TIL Hostile architecture, also commonly referred to as exclusionary design, describes attempts to restrict a person’s ability to use a public space. It aims to fight perceived social disorder rather than maximise the utility of public spaces. It’s also tied to systemic racism. #DarkPattern

There’s a particular kind of loneliness that comes from seeing things long before they happen. Speaking of it early, and the response is usually dismissal and disbelief: “You’re overthinking it.” “You’re getting ahead of yourself.” “You’re making something small into something bigger than it is.”

This Women’s History Month, I want to acknowledge two truths: Many of my past experiences with women were painful and horrible: gossip, bullying, abuse, betrayal, jealousy, and plagiarism. And I will always be grateful to the women I’ve never met who risked their lives and fought for my rights.

Sending compassion to every complex trauma survivor who remains in a freeze state due to the news, the world, the inundation with constant triggering information that your mind and body is trying to navigate. Do what you have to do to respect that response.

“Our wounds, whatever they are, are made more powerful by the silence around them. The naming of what has hurt us, how we have hurt others, and how those hurts still linger is the very undoing of the cloak that keeps the pain unseen and unaddressed. And this—the naming, the unveiling, the unsettling—as painful as it is, is central to how we heal.” (an excerpt, on page 10, from the book “Holy Hurt” by Hillary L. McBride, 2025) Photo taken by yours truly, Casey Lam (MadeByCasey.com)

Framing terms like “environmental justice,” “diversity, equity, inclusion” as “wasteful… destructive ideologies” is an outright lie (disinformation) and deliberate censorship. It strips people of the language they need to understand harm, repair it, and protect and treat one another with care.

Language is not neutral.
Black-coloured text on an off-white background that reads a paragraph from Robin DiAngelo's book, titled "Nice Racism," says: "Language is not neutral. The terms and phrases we use do not simply describe what we observe. In large part, the terms and phrases we use shape how we perceive or make meaning of what we observe. This is why the terms used for marginalised groups are constantly being challenged and negotiated. Consider the difference between “illegal alien” and “person entering the country illegally.” Or the difference between “China virus” and “COVID-19.” Or trace the trajectory of changes over my lifetime of this set of terms: “bum,” “tramp,” “wino,” “hobo,” “vagrant,” “homeless,” “persons without housing.” There are significant differences between the images and associations at the start of that list and the end. Those differences impact our perceptions and have real consequences for how people are treated and the resources they receive. Language is political and thus a continual site of struggle over who is deemed worthy of respect and access. Terms can implicitly authorise and normalise forms of domination and control, or interrupt them. Racial terms in particular are in flux, as historic power relations are made visible to the mainstream and awareness of structural inequity is deepened."

Society has conditioned us to shrink ourselves so that we’re “easy to love,” but, in reality, real love grows to meet and holds us exactly as we are.

We didn't need "perfect" parenting. No trauma survivor is in pain because our parents weren't "perfect." We needed parents, teachers, & clergy who were visibly trying to understand us & keep us safe. That's not "too high" a bar or "entitled."

When people say ‘be the bigger person,’ ‘let it go,’ or ‘move on,’ it’s not helpful. It’s retraumatising because what they’re actually saying is, ‘what they did to you was okay and they don’t need to be held accountable.’ These people are part of the problem, and they are not your allies.

We don’t learn to ride a bike from manuals but through trial and error, facing fears, and getting back up. Growth works the same way through repeated experiences, noticing patterns, feeling emotions, and trying again. There’s no shortcut to the slow, messy, experiential work of becoming better.

It baffles me that access to essentials (like safety, belonging, healthcare, education) is labelled as ‘radical’ or ‘woke.’ By doing this, we’re collectively opting into unnecessary suffering and calling it normal.

Judgement closes the circle; awareness keeps it open. Judgement fixes others in place, drawing a line that says you are this, and no more. Awareness meets them as they are now, in motion, in relation, and lets the line dissolve.

One of the most meaningful contributions to humanity—often unseen/rarely recognised—is working on yourself. It’s how you stop repeating the harm the world needs less of. It’s not mainstream because it’s uncomfortable, unglamorous, and forces you to face what most people spend their lives ignoring.
