Today for the first time the NEM hit 80.5% for 5 minutes, a new record but there are some other interesting things happening. * If we exclude the load needed to charge storage (both pumped #hydro and big #batteries) there was nearly enough renewables on the grid to turn off all the coal and gas.

.@theenergygang.bsky.social getting a gas spurker in to say gas is a decarboniser because it’s less harmful than coal is nonsense. It’s like trying to sober up by switching from whiskey to wine. What a joker.

Haha Farage is such a loser. Imagine loosing so many votes to a candidate independent candidate when no major parties ran. Then he lied and didn’t show up to the vote count. Loser

@laurentsegalen.bsky.social I just listened to episode 239. I don’t know what the guest was talking about. He seemed to have no idea what the difference between power and energy is. He mentioned watts per year??? Please ask for clarification next time.

Blue sky over Australia’s (currently) biggest solar farm in mid winter. Currently doing 234MW out of. Possibly 400MW. But it’s only 9:45am

Restoring peatland and building solar is a triple environmental win. Peat is fantastic at storing carbon, so leaving it locked up rather than burning it is great. Solar is the energy replacement. Then you get birds for free!

@reckless.bsky.social can we please have a separate feed for main Friday show. I listen from 🇦🇺 and the long show has my Saturday morning treat since the Engadget days. I listen to heaps of podcasts I don’t think squeeze in a daily and I don’t want the main one to get lost in the feed.

This is actually a good argument for pro-bike/pro-transit/pro-public space mayors to really double down on their policies. If they're going to accuse you of waging a war on cars if you take a small handful of parking spaces to improve your city, you might as well take a whole lot more.

I have been doing public climate and energy education on the internet since about 2017. I reckon I'm pretty good at it. I'd wager that if you have found this survey, you probably think so too sometime...

I’m listening to the latest episode of Columbia Energy Exchange. Why do they constantly have guest on who are fossil fuel pushers? The idea of a coal revival is nonsense. They cheap saying renewables are expensive but that is only in 🇺🇸 they are cheap elsewhere.

@sydneyev.bsky.social we are looking at a Kia ev5. what else is in that same size class? There are a lot that are a bit smaller - model y geely xpeng to name a few. There is the big dogs like the Kia ev9 and Hyundai ioniq 9 but nothing much in the middle except the ev5.

Can anyone explain what this is or what its purpose is? It has unlinked sources, confabulates several projects into one. It’s pro renewables but also nonsense. I can’t tell if this is helping or hindering the push for renewables. @ketanjoshi.co , @profraywills.futuresmart.com.au thoughts?

How big is 1GW? Well Australia’s (NEM+SWIS) daily peak power consumption is roughly 30-35GW. At this rate Australia could go completely solar powered in the middle of the day in 2 weeks if you ignore all the solar we already have.

Tomorrow the PM is meeting state and territory leaders about the fuel crisis. They should discuss making public transport free for as long as the crisis goes on. And as the Federal government is backing the war, they should pick up the tab.

In swap from fossil fuels to PV/ EVs/ clean tech, global total materials demand falls! 🤯 Using renewables means the world needs less materials Even EVs ~250kg extra metals in BEV VS ~35kg in ICE vehicle VS ICE car uses >20t lifetime fuel that's extracted, refined, burned VS recyclable battery
IEA estimate of solar offsetting shiploads of coal based on 2023 data
Since then, tech improves, and in 2026, effectiveness of clean energy shiploads is up by up to 15%
But, efficiency of a ship full of coal or gas remains static

As a renewable energy nerd & networking/homelab nerd this one hit all the right spots. I do have questions, like are the packets of electrons fungible or discrete? So could I sell out of my local microgrid while my neighbours is buying in from outside the microgrid? Does my energy just go next door?

Happy new year, Australia’s #NEM wholesale prices are down, average renewables penetration is up 4% points. Renewables curtailment is up so there is more #wind and #solar ready to dispatch if coal and gas could get out of the way. Big batteries become a visible force on the charts. 1/4

@hankgreen.bsky.social it’s very confusing seeing tons/tonnes being used incorrectly. Is it metric is it imperial? What are your thoughts on the metric system using the name megagram instead? It fits the metric naming conventions and sounds different.
