Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026aan de keuze voor "sortir" in plaats van "venir" (wat niets ruimtelijks heeft). Maar ik weet het ook niet, vandaar dat ik hier rondvraag 110
Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Or an ancient remnant from the times that “venir de” still had an element of spatial reference to it, very nice construction! 010
Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026But the “prendre” is not part of the expression in the Simenon quote and the “en” is pretty concrete in its reference — it is just about “prendre du café” 010
Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026🙏 Interesting! In the passage it is clearly just a way to refuse coffee, as he just had it at an other place. Nothing disagreeable or impolite intended 130
Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026🙏 I love the construction — grammaticalized to temporality but still retaining some spatial reference 😍 210

Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I wasn't aware that one can say in French "Je sors d'en prendre", which I think must be sth like "I just had it (scil. coffee) but at an other place" (Simenon, I'm reading theory as you can see) 121

Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 03/10/2026This is certainly an explanation that should be taken very seriously. Maybe it is just our bias that makes us doubt shoe agentivity? In fact, it is them that carry us while we're outside, why pretend we have a say in that? Shoes should control the means of locomotion. 110
Maarten Kossmann @maartenkossmann.bsky.social · 03/10/2026That's a major difference in explaining shoes vs cats under beds. The cat may have gone there on its own initiative, the shoe may have inspired you with its under-the-bed wish, but still needed your putting. (sorry, I am a bit tired from my Ferris wheel adventure today) 120
