What about West of St. George? No trains headed Eastbound it seems

Spending more and more time lately on data synthesis. My current mood: it's both way more interesting than I initially thought, but also way more vexing than I initially thought.

I think your last sentence sums it up. The remedy for bad policy should be better representative government that will make better policy, not a legal decision.

I'm surprised that this is the test that needs to be applied. But here we are.

[59] says that the question was whether there was a rational connection between reducing congestion and increased lanes. Judge clarified in [59] the gov't *didn't need to establish rationality* (??) but that the plantiffs did have to establish irrationality.

For the third time, I accept that. I accept that the court decided this was a legislative issue, not a charter issue to be decided by a court.

Lee Zamparo @lzamparo.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
That's the legal decision, which I have no issue with. But I have an issue with a judge saying his common sense disagrees with expert testimony in a different domain, therefore the experts are probably wrong. I don't think judge vibes should supersede expertise.

Story says Stel..is intends to sell the plant: "the company has indicated its intent to open discussions with another company about the potential sale of the plant." Most trad automakers already have plants here. Might be BYD / Geely looking to buy so it can sell++ into the Canadian market

Lee Zamparo @lzamparo.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
The decision may be correct, but some of the reasoning is appalling: the passages citing the "common sense" of more road lanes mean less traffic, and that "yeah they had an expert engineer but induced demand is just a theory, over which my own common sense prevails". cf bsky.app/profile/matt...

The province is legally able to pursue terrible policy, even if it suspects that it's bad policy, as long as it also expresses a public hope that it is not.

It's harder to hit upon a more relevant question than "what should Toronto become", yet I think we all acknowledge that the official plan is never going to be an animating issue.

"Hydro corridors for kilometers in every direction" eh? I must have missed the hydro corridor running east west through the city so people can get to where they want to go. Also the corridor(s) running north south to where people work, study, shop. Do people genuinely believe this nonsense?

Ever thus in ON. Part of this effect seems like habitual underestimation by ON gov to get it done. Part (I suspect) is regulation in ON pushing costs up, but I'd be glad to be wrong here. Part (I fear) are so few companies / consortia bid to build these complex infra that the public gets hosed

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.
