they called it the battle of salamis. I said salami? they said, no, it's salamis, it's not-- it's not a sausage, and I said wow. you wouldn't know it, but it's different. so we're looking into that.

At one point I had three (3) instances of OneDrive, and each morning was a fun game of figuring out which one worked today and what of my work from yesterday was gone. Nobody could figure out why they were duplicating and/or breaking

My firm migrated to Microsoft and within the month every office had at least one attorney who refused to use it. I had several days where all I did was read and wait for files to sync, cuz if you touched *anything* it broke

I do not think we should create a world of work that formalizes different expectations for those with and without children.

In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

Using AI for just 10 minutes erodes your ability to persist at hard things - Berkeley News
A UC Berkeley researcher co-authored a study that raises profound questions about how we interact with artificial intelligence in education — and daily life.

And anyway, the much more pressing moral concern is that the boosters keep saying the robots are moral subjects and are intelligent and conscious, which means they're cool with slaves! They think they own slaves! They want to make a living renting out slaves!

I reject chatbot moral questions immediately, in much the same way I reject the moral question of if it's mean to leave one car on the driveway and put the other in the garage. Because they are inanimate objects and making them moral subjects is patently absurd.

The best argument against this line of thinking is the tremendous body of evidence showing that violent video games don't contribute to violence or violent thinking. Turns out, a thing being A Simulation matters!

You guys fantasize, a lot, about not having to pay for labor or be responsible for treating the labor source with dignity. So much of GenAI discourse is about a desire for ethical enslavement. And that does not exist.

There's a place I like to hike in Kentucky. It's a popular route, but it's unmarked. It involves a ~250ft scramble. It's just bad enough that if it scares you, you are not capable of going back down. You *must* go all the way up. Every year, somebody falls on that climb.

A medieval manuscript has confounded scholars for centuries. Have they been reading it wrong all this time?
Researchers argue incorrect binding of Voynich manuscript radically changes ideas about its drawings and indecipherable text

What should you do if you pull up on a car crash before emergency services arrive? Let me walk you through what I did yesterday while driving with the family to the grocery store. Traffic backed up ahead of us and around a corner someone rear ended another car, there was airbag deployment.

Rod Hilton @rodhilton@mastodon.social

He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius. Then he talked about rockets. I don't know anything about rockets, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius. Now he talks about software. I happen to know a lot about software & Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit I've ever heard anyone say, so when people say he's a genius I figure I should stay the hell away from his cars and rockets. It's not a very charitable opinion, but these people should be scared. Not of violence, but of social rejection. Shame evolved as a method of encouraging and enforcing pro-social behavior. It *has* a place in society. Even the most ghoulish among them wants to be liked.

Totally fair. It helps that they won't put down the thesaurus and refuse to write in sentences less than 25 words. By the end of whatever argument they've produced, you've entirely forgotten anything they said that was even remotely reasonable

Sometimes the debate game is worth it because you're rarely actually arguing with your opponent, but rather performing for a persuadable audience. But these people are so repellant to outsiders that I'm not sure they don't do the audience persuading themselves

Lots of people are not good fits for a rescue. While your average shelter pit is not going to randomly eat a toddler, they are pretty likely to be animal-aggressive and have separation anxiety. That's a very large, very strong animal. Managing that is a skill.

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.
