This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Oh my gosh, this is real. I’ve already been a DDG user (mostly avoiding Google) for years. But this is now set as my home page. noai.duckduckgo.com
Screenshot of the no AI version of DuckDuckGo. The search dialogue box reads search privately without AI. Underneath to text boxes read: we’ve turned off AI assisted answers, we removed AI generated images.

We should treat genAI in publishing the way you’d treat a vampire trying to enter your home. You never give it permission to enter. It doesn’t matter if it‘s polite or makes generous offers or it’s *only* going to take the ones *you* don’t care about. It’s here for your blood. Don’t let it in.

Like all Canadian government surveys on AI, this is hilariously pro-AI. But it only takes like 5 minutes to fill out, and at the end you can make it clear that the only focus of the government when it comes to AI and culture is that Canadian artists need copyright protections from AI scraping.

“Tristin Hopper, whose Twitter bio describes himself as a “columnist and reporter” for the National Post, has fantasized online about running over pro-Palestinian protestors, whom he referred to as “watermelon zombies,” with his car. In 2019, he gained infamy for posting a photo with his foot on a dead raccoon, boasting that he stomped it to death.”

As one New York financier told Financial Times journalist Gillian Tett, new hires who were seen as “AI natives” are turning out to have alarmingly shallow ideas. So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

Once again, misogyny is the impetus behind brutal killing, this time in Montreal. Once again, we're going to ignore that simple fact. It's already happening, like it did with the Montreal Massacre, where the killer's anti-feminist ideology was initially dismissed as unimportant.
