Circa 1994-96 my parents did their best to do this lifestyle. Yes we did heat well water for our baths. Also I was I think the only kid in my class to have a PC and was called on for tech support by confused teachers.

Got sent a journal article to review which is responding to one I wrote last year - have to say, although it's critical in parts, it's a good feeling when someone really engages with something you've written like that

I like it when people use alt text because not only does it make things more accessible, it also lets me pretend to get references people make

Also, why do people only eat whole potatoes in Wiltshire? Because they've got no Devizes for Chippenham.

I will not vote Labour while it continues to arrest people for support of Palestine Action or while it continues to pursue regressive and discriminatory anti-trans measures. I do not think those are extremist red lines - they are, I think, a reasonable bare minimum.

unsolicited advice to other mid-career folks: set aside a few hours each week to sit down and read new text, or old theory. I'm doing it to prep for my PhD course, and I missed this SO much.

the republicans are wide open on several fronts, historically unpopular president, unpopular war, record high gas. any dem throwing trans people under the bus at this moment is doing it because they want to. not like they need to, do they. even if it worked as a vote winner, which it doesn't

i guess my take on the whole "should we throw trans people under the bus y/n" thing is that in this sort of environment, where the opposition party shot itself repeatedly in the dick and balls by starting an illegal war that made gas cost a million dollars, it shouldn't even be on the table

Fun fact the word 'fart' not only dates back to Old English but is in fact an Indo-European root and has a cognate in Nepali पाद्नु 'to fart' (among many other languages).

there is literally no reason to connect any of these things to the internet. air gaps are a perfectly good safety measure! if there's a danger, it is the *people* who are doing this with zero regard for basic discipline

I appreciate that the publisher of the Merry Wives of Windsor had the foresight to include a QR code.
The title page of a 1602 edition of the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Begins: A Most pleasaunt and excellent conceited Comedie, of Syr Iohn Falstaffe and the merrie Wiues of Windsor...

Near the bottom there is a decorative pattern which, if you squint, resembles a QR code

intrigued by the quotation marks around 'ghost' here - presumably because he has always been a supernatural entity or djinn-like being?
