Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

I know I'm incredibly lucky as an actor that I actually got to play Hamlet, even if only for a single night*, but sometimes I wish I could have had one more run at it. *I was the understudy! I went on for final dress! But at every other performance I played Horatio. College theatre was wild!

I think this play is Good and it is very cheap to do, but no one else has ever produced it. But also, I know it is a miracle that any play ever gets in front of an audience. Mustn't be greedy, I suppose.

The next year we did the show at the Cincinnati Fringe, then the Edinburgh Fringe, then in 2011 the Hollywood Fringe. And then immediately after we did an audio version to preserve it. (You can listen to the audio version at distanceovertime.net )

I had been listening to The Mysterious Production of Eggs and The Postal Service on repeat, and that shaped the story. I wrote the second half shortly thereafter, and we did a reading of the whole thing a couple weeks later.

I wrote my best play, "Of People and Not Things," out of necessity: I had a staged reading of a two-hander scheduled, but my second actor had to cancel a couple hours before the show. So I needed a thing I could perform alone with just a chair and a music stand.

The whole boomer argument against raising minimum wage I’ve heard my whole life is “working fast food or groceries is a starter job for kids.” Why? If someone is content bagging groceries, they should be able to just do that & enjoy their life. But the system doesn’t allow for opting out of “‘more.”

Thanks for this comparison! Looking at 2026, projections for data center spending are at $1.48 trillion. And global spending on solar for this year is estimated at $880 billion, adding ~612 GW of capacity.

Maybe 15 years ago, I was on a plane in the row in front of Dennis Haskins. He was traveling to be a guest at an educator conference, a thing he seemed to do frequently. He was talking with a dude in his 20s seated next to him who definitely did not have any awareness of Saved By the Bell.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

One challenge as a designer in the American Theatre is that so few of the theatres I work at are actually signatories of a CBA with my union, I end up individually negotiating every fee anyway.

In my opinion, this is a fundamental error in longtermism and EA: unless we do something about all of these big problems, we cannot possibly do something to solve these small problems. I would argue that the lack of support for the arts is a real problem that is actively harming humanity.

We paid artists a living wage AND kept ticket costs low. My last year in the job, the feedback we got from the grant review board was, "What does providing a living wage mean to the overall organizational structure? How was the decision made and how/when will you know its viability."

I spent 2014-24 trying to wield data to justify funding for the small theatre I was running to Business People. It didn't matter that we were more cost effective per audience member than larger orgs; we served fewer audience members and had little cash on hand. Only their specific metrics mattered.

There should be plenty of money to eliminate malaria deaths AND fund the arts. If the US redirected petroleum subsidies, for example, malaria prevention could be funded at the elimination level, and every non profit arts organization in the United States could receive sustaining funding.

This is the other problem with effective altruist thinking: in it, money can apparently only be spent on one thing at a time. Survival is insufficient. Why not fund both?

Andrew Hungerford @luxtheatrum.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think a problem with EA, even with what it said it purported to be at the beginning, is the process of turning all human endeavors into a spreadsheet. Once that happens, no local charity or small arts organization stands a chance at justifying their existence, no individual human matters.

This light plot has taken me a bunch of extra hours because I have updated all of my lighting symbols, and rebuilt all the schematic views for the vertical positions in VW 2027. The plot legitimately looks so much better, but all this extra drafting time chips away at my effective hourly rate.
