The whole boomer argument against raising minimum wage I’ve heard my whole life is “working fast food or groceries is a starter job for kids.” Why? If someone is content bagging groceries, they should be able to just do that & enjoy their life. But the system doesn’t allow for opting out of “‘more.”

I am now about the same age Shatner was in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. On the other hand, I am also about the same age Patrick Stewart was in the first season of TNG.

Maybe 15 years ago, I was on a plane in the row in front of Dennis Haskins. He was traveling to be a guest at an educator conference, a thing he seemed to do frequently. He was talking with a dude in his 20s seated next to him who definitely did not have any awareness of Saved By the Bell.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Very good sunset action tonight in LA.
Golden clouds in front of a blue sky, dark trees on the horizon. The clouds are now more of a rose pink.Same sunset, closer up, the color intensifies!

One challenge as a designer in the American Theatre is that so few of the theatres I work at are actually signatories of a CBA with my union, I end up individually negotiating every fee anyway.

This is very bad for democracy. The Supreme Court allowed this on free speech grounds but that is wrong: Their money crowds out the voices of the rest of the public.

funny thing about antitrust law is if you actually bother to enforce it you get markets with more small and mid-sized competitors that can't threaten you (see: Paramount threatening to leave California) as easily but alas, spineless corruption rules the american experiment

This light plot has taken me a bunch of extra hours because I have updated all of my lighting symbols, and rebuilt all the schematic views for the vertical positions in VW 2027. The plot legitimately looks so much better, but all this extra drafting time chips away at my effective hourly rate.

This is eugenics
Emily Hilliard, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, confirmed on Wednesday that the department had not yet made a decision about whether to provide the shots through that program.
Vaccines for Children provides free shots to children who are uninsured, underinsured or eligible for Medicaid, as well as to American Indian and Alaska Native children.
Pediatric doses are available for children who have insurance, or whose parents can afford to pay for vaccines out of pocket.

A thing that is missing in these 2020's for independent artists and small theatre organizations is a reliable discovery mechanism. Theatres used to be able to put an ad in the alt weekly, or splurge for an ad in the daily, and be pretty sure that people would see it.

Back when I ran a small theatre, we of course had some long term dream shows (some would be premieres, some were still waiting on second or third productions), but flexibility in crafting each individual season was key. How else could we be in conversation with our community and the world?
