There is however a tension between being represented and being documented. Documentation can provide security and recognition, but it can also become a tool of surveillance and control. The importance of documentation becomes particularly visible when records are missing.

In 2023 Kira Freije's 'On the Underside of her Breath' welcomed visitors into Contested Bodies. In 2025 Simeon Barclay's 'If This Is A Safe Space' illuminated Parkinson Court at the entrance to [uz],[uz],[uz]: Artists from Working-Class Backgrounds. Turner Prize 2026 is at MIMA until 29 March 2027.
White text on black over a photograph of an artwork reads

"Kira Freije (b.1985, United Kingdom)
On the Underside of her Breath
2019
Steel, cast aluminium, fur

The pose of this sculpture is both theatrical and powerful: a modern-day warrior woman. A feeling of desire permeates through the figure. Her body armour and the strength of her facial pose hint at the complexity of intimacy and protection in human relations.
This work is exemplary of the sculptural practice of Kira Freije, an artist who works with metals that she welds, casts and manipulates. Freije often references the figure, the domestic, and the psychological within her work."White text on black over a photograph of an artwork reads

"Simeon Barclay (b. 1975)
If This is a Safe Space
2025
Decommissioned parachute and neon

The piece reflects Simeon Barclay’s experience of navigating the UK education system as a Black person from a working-class background. In the artist’s words: ‘If This is a Safe Space addresses the complexities of moving through thresholds, the anxiety of adapting to new social norms and the psychological questioning born of being in uncharted territory.’
Barclay is interested in exploring the social dynamics of memory, class, desire and inheritance. He uses these themes as catalysts for producing works that, with humorous undertones, come to express the paradoxes and ambiguities of situating and defining ourselves within culture and tradition."
