Meter is used to present measurements, whereas progress is used to present how complete something is. A real world example where I've used meter before is to show someone their cloud storage usage.

Yeah it makes deciding on APIs and designs for it difficult because its usage is pretty low. The context is coming up with appearance base styles and pseudo elements/classes for it. Like I have a plan but someone mentioned that maybe we just don't need the three state odd algorithm we have.

Do you make websites? What do you wish <select> listbox did? Or didn’t do? This is the HTML. Currently, it automatically creates a listbox with 4 options showing. <select id="foobar" multiple> If you want 6 items showing, you write <select id="foobar" multiple item="6">. What should it be?

I'm obviously slightly biased but I think the keyboard (and mouse tbf) interaction model needs a complete overhaul. The model used by dropdown select where the arrows move your "focus" but don't change the selected option is far better UX, than the model that listboxes on the web have used.

I'm sorry for my part in that (implementing and shipping in chrome) I promise I was trying to do a good thing. My thinking is the standard approach was better than the ::-webkit-scrollbar stuff but I admit the thin scrollbar-width value will probably be misused.

WebKit line clamp is a fever dream when you dig into it. So standardising isn't as simple as removing the prefix, got to work out how it should actually fit in with modern layout. My colleague's been implementing this in chromium and specifying for a while now. I think it's getting pretty close.

user-select is mostly implemented in WebKit they might have even enabled it at one point but I think it broke stuff so had to be reverted. It'll happen eventually. Chrome got WebKit line clamp for free. Firefox probably just had to for compat reasons.

Yeah that's the only one I can think of nowadays. Obviously -webkit-line-clamp too but I use it far less often and that's a thing everywhere. Also its being worked on to get a line-clamp.

I did get some flying ants recently but I think the summer heat mostly kept them at bay. Though I was actually thinking the other day how few wasps I've seen all year. Like really very few (a handful of posers obviously).

I think the main thing I use a compiler for is prefixing properties for Safari. Admittedly that's far less necessary nowadays.

But if you do notice web compat issues where the changes break your styling that's definitely worth reporting. Web compat is the main concern.

Fwiw many (not all though) of the changes are to properties that were already being set. So if you've overridden them you should already be fine. The overarching goal is still to make it incredibly easy for developers to customise too. You still have full control.

Yeah for base appearance interopable defaults is a major requirement. Once the working group has worked its way through the various changes (some of which might even require further Safari changes) then Chrome will need (and have said they're willing) to update accordingly.

There's no nice screenshots in the install UI unlike Chrome's improved install flow. The app icon also doesn't include any shortcuts included in your manifest file (another feature Chrome supports). It also means that browsers are somewhat at the mercy of Google to support new manifest features.

Importantly, when you click the app icon it loads in the app that requested the installation. Seems the app needs to implement the a CustomTabsService for the launching to work. All of this is a good step in the right direction but it's pretty rough around the edges right now.

I (mostly AI tbf) generated a test app for me. You provide the manifest URL, to a simple API call and it starts the install flow. You do get a security check warning (might be my security settings) but click through and you get a proper APK that shows up in your launcher properly.

It looks like Google is finally working on a way to support third-party browsers being able to install proper APKs for web apps. This is generally something that only Chrome can do currently. There's very little public documentation and it still seems quite early, but there's a new WebAppManager API

On Friday I finally got down to Eastleach to see the Long-Tailed Shrike that had been resident this summer. Then on Saturday despite being very wet and windy, and low tide I managed to find the Baird's Sandpiper near Swansea. 20 lifers for the year. 3 for the week! #BirdingWales

Disappointment Immeasurable

This evening I learned (remembered) that Chromium and WebKit don't have a pseudo for the fill/progress part of a range input. Presumably they just decided to do that at paint time because reasons?

Though I suspect that they're just going to keep that kind of design ability away from the web due to 'fingerprinting'.

Caniuse has been known to miss stuff especially if it's not in any release notes but I'm also surprised if they even parse the media queries beyond what an unknown media query does. I definitely wouldn't expect anything until at least 27 but probably would wait till 27.1 or be iOS only or something

I wonder how much of this stuff Safari will end up having. I wouldn't be surprised if it just ends up being the same as iPads 'desktop class' browsing.
