my response: How can you tell? Often it will lean in the less heavy/bulky direction, hence the joke's relatability.

her response: I have a secret technique I developed as a child garbage scientist, called "jiggle the bag while you pull it out of the can so heavy stuff falls to the bottom" and also this other thing I have called a peripheral nervous system that can detect loads shifting.

my response: I suppose the problem occurs when there's a mix of rigid items and soft items which can create unpredictable internal load distribution. Bag defory can shift the lean direction and center of gravity as well
