I recently read Everything is F*cked: A Book About Hope by Mark Manson. It helped me understand that people don't listen to or care about facts. "The internet, in the end, was not designed to give us what we need. Instead, it gives people what they want." youtu.be/04uuQvSUZkU

This, from the Holocaust Memorial Museum.

There are three key facts in the Holocaust Encyclopedia produced by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. This is the second key fact:

What distinguishes a concentration camp from a prison (in the modern sense) is that it functions outside of a judicial system. The prisoners are not indicted or convicted of any crime by judicial process.

The difference between the Nazis and russians is that the Nazis were punished, which led to change. russians, however, escaped justice — their terror, already evident for centuries including WW2, went unpunished and has since evolved into something even more ruthless and unchecked.

If you’re wondering what a spreadsheet looked like in 1800 BCE, here is one that tallies foodstuffs for cattle received by four cowherds. Three are named in the right hand column as Ubar-Shamash, Sin-iddinam, Sin-re’um, and the last one making the record simply writes “mine”

Photo of a rectangular clay tablet in landscape mode pictured from the front at the top of the picture, the back at the bottom of the picture. Between the two is a shot of the bottom of the tablet, which looks like a narrow clay strip.

The front of the tablet is separated into boxes like an excel spreadsheet. The boxes have cuneiform signs in them.

The bottom of the tablet has about two lines of cuneiform text.

The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, NOT as a moral standard, but as a social contract. If someone does not abide by the terms of the contract, they are not covered by it. In other words, the intolerant aren't deserving of your tolerance.

A little piece of uncommon knowledge: a reason the U.S got entangled in the Vietnam War, was that during McCarthyism all the East-Asia experts were purged from the state department. Which gives you an idea of what long-term damage the purging of highly qualified people from government can do.

Welcome to the public domain, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1929) by Erich Maria Remarque. This masterpiece's portrayal of the human cost of war is timeless. 🌍💥 📖 Learn more. ➡️ blog.archive.org/2025/01/01/welcome… #PublicDomainDay #InternetArchive

Quote from Erich Maria Remarque's, All Quiet on the Western Front (1929), reads, "It’s all rot that they put in the war-news about the good humour of the troops, how they are arranging dances almost before they are out of the front-line. We don’t act like that because we are in a good humour: we are in a good humour because otherwise we should go to pieces." Quote framed by "Welcome to the Public Domain" text and graphic.

I came across an outdated guide on image grid sizing crop/proportions for bsky earlier, and I felt it was important to create an updated version! Please use this new guide instead!

Up-to-date BlueSky Crop Aspect Ratio
Crop Sizes for Bluesky as of 18 Oct 2024

By default, single images are uncropped. If image is too tall (Exceeds the 1:2 aspect ratio) then it will be cropped. Single images that are too tall may be scaled down but aspect ratio is preserved

With two images, both of them share a square aspect ratio of 1:1

For three images, the first image is square (1:1) while the other two are half-squares (2:1)

And for 4 images, all of them are 3:2
