![the effects of economic Depression. In Modern Times, he showed a worker driver insane by a single-track occupation on the production line, where machines made robots out of men. In public speeches Chaplin harangued a system that over-produced food, and then destroyed it even though people were starving. He illustrated this in Monsieur Verdoux, where a meek bank clerk goes on a killing spree to provide for his family.
After he had left America, Chaplin wrote, "America has changed. The gigantic scale of industrial institutions, of press, television, and commercial advertising has completely divorced me from the American way of life. I want the other side of the coin, a simpler personal sense of living." These concerns drove the satire of A King in New York.
But Chaplin was also concerned for the soul of America. He said, "[America is] so terribly grim in spite of all the material prosperity. I'm not against materialism but look at what the American kind has done. They no longer know how to weep. Compassion and the old neighbourliness have gone. People stand by and do nothing when friends and neighbours are attacked, libelled, and ruined. The worst thing is what it has done to the children. They are being taught to admire and emulate stool pigeons, to betray and to hate-and all in a sickening atmosphere of religious hypocrisy."](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:saiglzbuhgqyo4rb5xhf7e5r/bafkreigtdygps7vaajot5es6d6flwutyn2lh7dofqbh4l6567e2e2i352u)
