The ICE raids and cruelty we are seeing inflicted on children are unacceptable.

The federal government has stripped legal representation from hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied children. Many will soon face an impossible choice: navigate our immigration system alone or risk detention and deportation.

Our city is stepping up. We've invested $16.9 million in immigration legal services for unaccompanied children, with another $32 million in this year's immigration legal services budget, including rapid-response legal advice and representation for people in detention.

If you need immigration legal support, we're here to help. Our free, confidential Immigration Legal Support Hotline is available in your preferred language, regardless of immigration status.

In my latest Hey Portland! column, I’m unpacking some of the recent Moda headlines, why it’s important to get some basic answers about the renovation, and why I don’t think the City’s answer should be “how high?” when the other party asks us to jump. Full column is at the link:

I’m tired of biting my tongue (because clearly other people are not!):
Laptop graphic with Moda. Portland Doesn't Need to Choose Between Keeping the Blazers or Getting a Fair Deal. “Over the past few weeks, Portlanders have been told a simple story about the future of the Trail Blazers. Either we move quickly to approve millions of taxpayer funding, no questions asked, or we risk losing the team. We’ve been told that councilors are being petty, unrealistic, and antagonistic – we're the problems.

But here’s the thing: I don’t think Portlanders are buying this. Because anyone who’s been paying attention can tell that the Blazers are the ones turning the Moda renovation into a political football and waging negotiations through emailed press statements and bombastic quotes to the media.”

Portland's mayor just cast a rare tiebreaker vote on a supplemental budget ordinance pitched by progressive councilors (Green, Morillo, Avalos, Kanal, Koyama Lane) and killed it. The proposal would have drawn from Clean Energy Fund interest and other contingencies to save city jobs. (1/2)

NEW from @gregsargent.bsky.social: it sure sounds like @ICEgov is trying to stop the witnesses to the shooting of Lorenzo Araujo from speaking out. All three of the people in the van have been kept in detention and now ICE is pressuring them all to agree to be deported. /reposted with correct name
But it appears three other people were in the van with the now-deceased man, and they presumably could recount their version of what happened: the victim’s brother and two employees of the dead man’s construction business. They were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the encounter, and we haven’t heard from them publicly about what happened. Now, in another potentially dark turn in the saga, those three men are under pressure from immigration officials to agree to self-deport, Juan Proano, a representative for the families and CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, claimed in an interview with The New Republic.

Proano—who regularly confers with the family members of the victim and the three detainees and organized a press conference on their behalf earlier this week—said the family members were able to reach the three detainees, who then related this situation.

“They’re being pressured to sign self-deportation orders,” Proano told me. “They’re currently in detention. These men hold the key to what actually happened.” Under self-deportation, detained migrants agree to leave the country voluntarily within a prescribed time period.

So… Cheyenne, WY won't take data center wastewater anymore after Meta/FB's "Fill and Flush" process (how they test data center cooling systems) was responsible for polluting their whole community's wastewater reclamation system with Cupriavidus gilardii bacteria: cowboystatedaily.com/2026/07/02/c...
According to the statement, Goat Systems immediately stopped discharging wastewater from fill-and-flush operations at Meta's Cheyenne Data Center CHY 1-2 after being notified of the contamination.

BOPU also revoked the company's industrial discharge privileges for those operations effective March 24.

The incident has led to broader changes beyond Meta's project.

BOPU also is suspending acceptance of industrial wastewater from data center fill-and-flush and closed-loop system operations until further notice while officials evaluate how to prevent future incidents.BOPU previously confirmed the bacterium had entered the city's wastewater treatment process through an industrial user but declined to identify the company while the investigation remained underway.

The contaminant was traced to wastewater generated during data center fill-and-flush operations, a process used to clean and test cooling systems before a facility begins operation.

No one should be waiting 8 months for help they need & are eligible for. But understaffed states now face huge new costs if they mistakenly give families too much or too little in SNAP — while delaying or outright denying benefits to eligible families doesn’t count as an “error.”
PHOENIX — Michelle Flowers says it took eight months for her to get her food stamp benefits reinstated after they lapsed last year — and she only got it done, she said, because she was laid off from her job at a call center and finally had time.
The 36-year-old mother of four was exactly the kind of person the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was meant to help. But Arizona had ramped up the program’s vetting, scrambling to comply with new rules in President Donald Trump’s signature legislation. Even people eligible for government help were swept up in the strict implementation, analysts say, as an agency already operating on thinner staff struggled to process cases.
