My search for the teenage consumer has veered toward motorscooters. Great example here for #Vespa of 1961. surely being a teen was all about indepdendence.

Two great venues down for @historyofads.bsky.social Teenage Kicks, Westminster & @unibirmingham.bsky.social Off to @lborouniversity.bsky.social next week. To whet the appetite, check out the cut of these Lee Cooper denims & slacks of April 1965.

Love this photo of students viewing the @historyofads.bsky.social showreel as part of our Teenage Kicks exhibition. Although many examples are in living memory, young people are typically incredulous.

I am off to @unibirmingham.bsky.social on Monday with @historyofads.bsky.social exhibition about teenage consumers. Thought I would check to see how the archive represents the Second City. This from Rowntree's Fruit Gums of the 1950s www.hatads.org.uk/catalogue/re...

I have created a thing for the @historyofads.bsky.social, an exhibition reflecting on the teenage consumer from 1959 to the turn of the 21st century. We are touring, last night London Gallery West, from Monday @unibirmingham.bsky.social Come along, and stay tuned for further venues as we work north.

I have been thinking a good deal about teenagers, consumption, & how they are portrayed in #advertising. Thus, I was interested to find this. Aside from the one leg pose, there is an established, strong association with teens and noodles. Please consult @historyofads.bsky.social for more.

Hey @historyofads.bsky.social check this out: a faux olde worlde pub on Bold Street #Liverpool complete with fake ghost sign. Here’s your weekend homework: Evocations of the past establish authenticity and credibility. Discuss.

A delightful piece of prose c/o Malchow's 'Special Relations' (2011): "the Deviants had already booked a gig at Essex when student rebels occupied the university and, living on smuggled sausage rolls and jam tarts, urged the band to come help celebrate the revolution there in an act of solidarity".

I have strayed off piste into the late 1930s as I continue to explore teenage consumer culture. Are these "teenagers" in October 1938? 'Snappy..snug...smart young people'. Surely the bookcase is the give. From the amazing C&A archive at @historyofads.bsky.social

@historyofads.bsky.social is on the road from Sept with an exhibition on the teenage consumer. This is one of my favourite quotes, “Between now and the time I’m eighteen I’ve got to ‘do the lot’. ‘ave a good time, I say, before I get called up, blown up or married” 'Picture Post', 8 Apr 1957

Such is the nature of my day job, I get to see a lot of advertisements thanks to the @historyofads.bsky.social extraordinary collections. However, was genuinely shocked by this for YOP ('FHM', Aug. 2002).
A motorcycle courier transporting live, human organs stops by the roadside and appears to consume what he is transporting to quench his hunger. A full-page, full-colour advertisement for YOP drinking yoghurt.

Check out this happening discotheque ('Smash Hits', 1983). I am classing the participants here as groovy young people which fit my definition of #teenagers as far as my @historyofads.bsky.social forthcoming, touring exhibition is concerned.

I have always been quite keen on the approach of 'Campaign' (@campaignuk.bsky.social). Trying to bring my search for the teenage consumer up-to-date I have been going through back issues and love this appraisal of a Skittles campaign from April 2005:

Dr David Clampin @wwiiadvertising.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I fear, in the late #1950s the British #teenager was held in low esteem, considered to be addicted to pleasure and obsessed with "playing ‘pop’ records, reading romantic magazines and fiction paper-backs, going to the cinema and the dance hall” (@financialtimes.com, 28 November 1958, 13).

How to capture the teenage girl of the late 1950s? According to 'Picture Post', April 1957, 'They seem to have more money than is good for them and they seem to spend it all on sweaters two sizes too small and ear-rings ten sizes too large’.

Music is a key interest for the teenager. In August 1956, the 'Daily Mirror' described rock 'n' roll thus: '[Lyrics] lost in a gurgle of breathless spasms [which] could mean anything from choking to insanity’. The rhythm as about as musical 'as the flushing of a sewer'. It will never catch on...
