Resident Music’s email notifications for orders do seem a little, um… Brightony. But it has the upside that when you go in to pick stuff up, there’s happy surprises awaiting. Yesterday was like all my Christmases had come at once!

It’s still 1992! Britain, the land which first struck Metal, spawning Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, had disowned its own progeny and marginalised the genre. Not so America. For example, there was Sleep. If it took a while for them to reach deep Sleep here’s where it happened -

It’s 1992! And on a brighter note… ‘Television’, by the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, might seem speakers-over-screens oneupmanship, but I prefer to think of it as media in autocritique, the samples and rapid-fire delivery channelling channel-hopping- www.youtube.com/watch?v=AioH...

The Jim Ghedi set at the Green Door Store last night was much enjoyed. You know when you're not in a traditional Folk gig when the singer suggests not standing too near the amps. This isn't Brighton footage, but is a track they played... www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRVx...

It’s still 1991! There are those who diss Nirvana for leaving the Grunge scene behind. But had they stayed they’d have second fiddled to Mudhoney for the rest of their days. There's nothing wrong with scenes staying small, tight and pure. But Nirvana going so big said something about the Nineties.

I saw Sairie perform their enthralling folk music in a Church a week ago. An eternity in social media terms, where yesterday is already sen as so yesterday. But then I stumbled across some good footage of it. And I'm glad to see it confirmed it happened and wasn't some dream I was having

This Ed Sheeran outrage has something very annoying about it. I don’t care much what a cheesy Pop singer thinks about Palestine, and I’m not terribly surprised to hear he prizes his own career above it. The point is that multiple venues threatened to scrap the tour if Macklemore wasn’t dropped.

I suppose in years to come 9/11 will be marked in calendars as International Wingnuts Out The Woodwork Day. Happy reading posts excitedly pointing out the melting point of steel and other such factoids, to all to celebrate.

It’s 1991! We’ve made it into a new decade! By the late Eighties music had often felt broken. Like something carelessly dropped, it had fractured into a thousand separate micro-scenes. Like the Bible story about Babel, our once-common language confounded.

Labour's sanctions against the ‘settlers’ (try ‘ethic cleansers’) still try to maintain the pretence there's some distinction between them and the Israeli government. Which was pretty much never true, but what was once a hand-in-glove relationship is now out in the open. There are settlers...

Hey, you well-read lot! Anybody know anything about Gene Wolfe? Is he worth a punt? Does he have a best work or best introductory work? A lot of it seems to do the multi-volume series. Could read the first volume as standalone? Or would you be committing to the full thing?

In a way, the Fascists are right. There *is* two-tier policing. It's just the other way up to their claims. Had our side done anything remotely like Dover, we'd have been banged up in no time. Remember, people have been nicked for holding banners or sending emails.

It's still 1990! The unit of music had once been the single. The song form had largely evolved inside it, a habitat of three minute borders. But that was starting to change, & so changed music. ‘Post-Rock’ is a clunky term, but for all that a useful one. Often unfairly compared to Prog... (1/3)

It’s 1990! The year Sinead O’Connor released ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’. The one where a fancy video was abandoned when they realised just her face could do the talking. The one where she sang “nothing can stop these tears from falling” as… well, you know. (1/3) www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-EF...

Our history of music through two tracks a year has reached the Nineties, aka the Time Between. At the start of the decade, you’d buy an LP from a shop because that was how hearing music worked, and ‘music’ meant ‘the music of now’. Before the end, all that had changed. (1/3)

I once read a review of one of the later ‘Hitch-Hiker’s Guide’ books, which said Zaphod Beeblebrox didn’t work when encountered directly. A larger-than-life character needs someone human-size to be seen through. But that’s enough about the ‘Interview With the Vampire’ sequel ‘The Vampire Lestat’…

4/5ths of right wing ‘thinking’ is sheer selfishness. “I should be able to drive my SUV up and down, even if it pollutes some kids’ lungs.” And the other 1/5th is just bollocks. To disguise the four fifths a bit. This sounds like rhetoric, but its literally true. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It’s 1989! And sampling has entered music in earnest. Not just copying old tracks any more, creating by cutting ’n’ pasting - something quite different. Some called this the end of music. When it was just catching up with what art did in the Twenties. (1/3) www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmo3...

More great three-album runs, this time the curveballs. Where the corners they take makes everything better in context... Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited/ Blonde On Blonde/ John Wesley Harding Neil Young: After The Gold Rush/ Harvest/ On The Beach The Jam: All Mod Cons/ Setting Sons/ Sound Effects..

That 'great three-album runs' meme... first, there's a 'three strikes' variant, where they hit on a sweet spot, then hammer it again and again, like... Hawkwind: In Search of Space/ Doremi Farso Latido/ Space Ritual Captain Beefheart: Strictly Personal/ Trout Mask Replica/ Lick My Decals Off Baby+

It’s 1988! Rock music had for too long been cleaned up, made into a soundtrack to buy designer jeans to. Grunge made it scuzzy and undesirable again, pushed it back in the gutter. It had back its mojo. And no-one did that better than Mudhoney. (1/2) www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nGs...
