that chatbot doing that unsafe/violative thing is not it 'going rogue' or an 'unfortunate incident of unintended consequences,' it’s the logical and devastating consequences of an unsafe product put out by irresponsible companies that have been conditioned to believe consequences dont exist for them

Every time I see someone talk about Claude I think about how they switched from female to male names as soon as they wanted the robots to seem like experts vs personal assistants.

This will be an exciting announcement. But Perseverance is facing a 23% budget cut to operations in FY 2026 that will directly impact the ability to make more discoveries like this going forward. www.nasa.gov/news-release...

the interesting thing about this era of software is that i'm increasingly turning to free + open source stuff because it's just more reliable than the things you pay for

The Senate is working on NASA’s budget THIS WEEK. The White House’s proposed NASA budget would slash NASA science by half, and astrophysics by 2/3. Can you take 5 minutes and call your Senators to ask them to support NASA science? Numbers and scripts in the link. www.planetary.org/save-nasa-sc...

I always come back to this image from NCAR when seeking to introduce the idea that predictability is a function of the scale of the event. Individual thunderstorms have low practical and inherent predictability; we simply cannot *reliably* predict when and where they will occur beyond a few hours.

Hot take. The government isn’t subsidizing university budgets. Universities are lending subsidized expertise to research and development that contributes to the public good. It’s called partnership.

Thank NASA for this. This work was supported by NASA ADAP grant 80NSSC21K1421. It resulted directly from our astronomical data processing needs. Every major company in the world uses Python extensively, has this problem, and did not solve it. NASA funded scientists did.
