As unprofessional as it may be, I suspect I will be shouting "we have been saying this for years" a lot today. Harsher immigration policies don't just ruin individual lives, they damage the economy, reduce jobs, and generally harm the whole country.

So many great suggestions here. I love Janet and Allan Ahlberg. But for a less well known choice I love Richard van Kamp and Julie Flett's 'Little You'. Also Ken Wilson-Max's Lenny books are lovely.

The fact that I read this and was like ‘hahaha another list to lose’ yet am not actually diagnosed with ADHD is one data point in the ‘maybe it’s actually under diagnosed tho’ column 🤣

Just a reminder as the new academic year kicks off - the UK government has deliberately, ruthlessly, throttled the recruitment of international students, solely to pander to racists, and the resultant 25%+ fall in numbers can and will only accelerate some universities into bankruptcy.

Clearer information on the potential for terms to change seems negligible given that the vast majority of students have no real choice about taking out a loan. We neee a fairer way of funding higher education. www.theguardian.com/money/2026/s...

What the UK Government is going by its decisions on trans people is teaching trans people that authority doesn't protect, but instead abuses. This applies in schools, in the workplace, in civic society, in politics, in healthcare. And if they can do this to trans people, they can do it to anyone.

Just read @patricknessbooks.bsky.social The Piper at the Gates of Dawn which has great parents and grandparents. I also liked how it represented kids’ relationships with not great parents, dismissing the loyalty and love between them.

Most of my students work already! I’m sure they’ll be super happy to do some work for free on top of the work they’re already doing to afford the education they have actually chosen to study 🙃

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Yes, this also appeals to me haha! These bikes were ok for us but not what we'd pick probably if they hadn't found their way to us.

I am quite keen to attend their training on bike repair but would like to get these up and running sooner that that!

Lucy Pearson @lrpearson.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Yeah they were never ones we'd picked out just ones that found their way to us! But I hate waste haha. (They won't go to waste if they're usable as I'll donate them to somewhere that can refurb.)

Lucy Pearson @lrpearson.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Yeah I was considering donating them there if we decide to start again. Maybe I've been unlucky but I've never found them very forthcoming with advice when I've visited which is why they weren't my first port of call for this question!

They look to me still usable and if I didn't keep I'd prob offer to a charity to restore and sell. But I have no idea how bikes age - if its a few decades old is it just going to be a bit rubbish now?

Context: the frames look ok (not rusty or anything). Spokes a bit rusty but not terrible. Am assuming the tires are perished by now! One had a new chain last time we used it (about 6 years ago). I am unlikely to do any renovation / repair myself so I'd be paying for this.

Biking friends, I need advice. I have two old bikes (20-30 years old) which have been stored in my shed untouched for the last five years. I think they were both decent bikes new but nothing specialist. Is it likely to be worth renovating them or will it cost me more than just buying 2nd hand?

It was obvious this film would be dreadful from the first trailer. But the annoying thing about this hot take is that the book already has a grey area! it shows us how Scrooge’s past experiences led him down the path he’s on and then is like - that was a bad path my friend!

New from me: Britain’s graduate earnings premium is falling, cue “too many go to university!” But non-university outcomes are also bad, cue “we must reform vocational routes!” Both miss the point: people used to think education drove economic outcomes, but the economy drives educational outcomes.

Sooo many. Enjoy the period where you get entire control over the reading choices. My children’s lit scholar heart is PAINED by some of my five year old’s choices! If you haven’t come across them yet highly recommend Baby’s First Bank Heist series by Jim Wheatley and Stephen Collins

Cities dismantled their tram networks to become “motor cities of the future”. The result? You could travel further within 30 mins via public transport in 1957 than you can in 2026. Cities are seeking billions to rebuild networks. Incredible piece of work this.

However certainly true that many schools did not fully understand the value of the SLS in terms of expertise and so just buying cheap books seemed like a better option.

I mean to be fair on schools it was lots of things - it was the shift from funding things at LEA level to giving schools more ‘control’ over budgets which was actually less cost effective and as always led to trade offs between many desirable things.

But when they became something schools had to buy into they quickly became the first thing to go when budgets got tight. To recreate the services that existed 25 years ago would now be £££££

The devastating thing is we had a solution for these problems which was school library services. They were a cost efficient way of providing expert staff who could advise on books purchased by schools as well as a stock of books which were maintained and could be exchanged.
