My favourite part of having multiple devices with screens is that none of them display colour accurately so I can never tell if the thing that looks fine on my drawing tablet is being misrepresented by my phone, my laptop, or, in fact, the drawing tablet. And colour calibration hasn't even helped!

#makeaterriblecomicday2024 wow it’s that time of year again!
A (terrible) comic. PANEL 1: Emma looks at her watch. “What! It’s JUNE 24th already?” PANEL 2: “That means it’s MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY! how does it sneak up on me every year?” PANEL 3: “participation is SIMPLE. just make a comic! It doesn’t have to be funny or insightful or beautiful or interesting. make something for the joy of making it and if you feel it going wrong just trust yourself and keep going!!!” PANEL 4: “make a comic and don’t stop until it’s made!” PANEL 5: “remember that ole MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY saying, ‘if you want to make something GREAT, you need to start by making something TERRIBLE.’” PANEL 6: “or the other saying, ‘YOUR PARTICIPATION IS COMPULSORY!’ Stop thinking and get to work!”

In addition to these never-before-seen cosmic neighbors, Rubin detected another ~1800 previously-known asteroids, bringing the total detections to just under 4000 in just 10.5 hours!🔭🧪 In other words, over half of Rubin's first detections are new discoveries☄️
An illustration of the asteroid belt as a dense donut-shaped ring of yellow points with the Sun at the center. The background is black with hints of dark blue in the corners and small white pinprick stars sprinkled throughout. A small illustrated Earth sits to the left of the Sun, and a semi-opaque, cone-like teal triangle extends from Earth toward the right. The cone opens up to a mosaic of a couple dozen small, square-like shapes representing Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera’s detector area. The mosaic is overlaid onto a portion of the asteroid belt, and each tile represents a camera image that detects a group of asteroids.

A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. The image focuses on a collection of interacting galaxies connected by delicate streams of stars. At top center lies a large elliptical galaxy that is dense and smooth, like a polished stone glowing with golden light. Like delicate spider silk or stretched taffy, these stellar bridges link the large elliptical to the few larger galaxies beneath, evidence of past collisions.

All throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors against the black of space. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black. A cosmic tapestry of glowing tan and pink gas clouds with dark dust lanes. In the upper right, the Trifid Nebula resembles a small flower in space. Its soft, pinkish gas petals are surrounded by blue gas, and streaked with dark, finger-like veins of dust that divide it into three parts. It radiates a gentle, misty glow, diffuse and soft like the warmth of breath on a cold hand. To the lower left, the much larger Lagoon Nebula stretches wide like a churning sea of magenta gas, with bright blue, knotted clumps sprinkled throughout where new stars are born. Both nebulae are embedded in a soft tan backdrop of gas that is brighter on the left than on the right, etched with dark tendrils of dust and sprinkled with the pinpricks of millions of stars.A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. To the lower left is a region filled with the hundreds of golden glittering gems of a distant galaxy cluster. In the foreground, below and right of center, two blue spiral galaxies look like eyes beneath the entangled mass of a triple galaxy merger in the upper right. A few bright blue points of foreground stars pierce the glittering tapestry.

My first first-author paper just dropped on arXiv ✨👩‍🔬🧪🔭 Introducing the KiloNova and Transients Program (KNTraP), a search specifically designed to find a kilonova. Check it out here to see the methods developed to scour the data for kilonova candidates, and what we found: arxiv.org/abs/2411.16136
Abstract of the KNTraP paper.

Text: Compact binary mergers detectable in gravitational waves can be accompanied by a kilonova, an electromagnetic transient powered by radioactive decay of newly synthesised r-process elements. A few kilonova candidates have been observed during short gamma-ray burst follow-up, and one found associated with a gravitational wave detection, GW170817. However, robust kilonova candidates are yet to be found in un-triggered, wide-field optical surveys, that is, a search not requiring an initial gravitational wave or gamma-ray burst trigger. Here we present the first observing run for the Kilonova and Transients Program (KNTraP) using the Dark Energy Camera. The first KNTraP run ran for 11 nights, covering 31 fields at a nightly cadence in two filters. The program can detect transients beyond the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA horizon, be agnostic to the merger orientation, avoid the Sun and/or Galactic plane, and produces high cadence multi-wavelength light curves. The data were processed nightly in real-time for rapid identification of transient candidates, allowing for follow-up of interesting candidates before they faded away. Three fast-rising candidates were identified in real-time, however none had the characteristics of the kilonova AT2017gfo associated with GW170817 or with the expected evolution for kilonovae from our fade-rate models. After the run, the data were reprocessed, then subjected to stringent filtering and model fitting to search for kilonovae offline. Multiple KNTraP runs (3+) are expected to detect kilonovae via this optical-only search method. No kilonovae were detected in this first KNTraP run using our selection criteria, constraining the KN rate to R<1.8×10^5 Gpc−3 yr−1.Plot showing the volume per night covered by a survey. Volume increases towards the top right corner of the plot. DES survey is shown leftmost, then further right is KNTraP with multiple volumes demonstrating the balance between of number of fields/area on sky observed per night versus the depth achieved, both in dark and bright sky time. Rightmost shown are projected KWFI nightly volumes.
