My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

Larger theater companies, music venues and museums typically get more attention, but it’s smaller arts organizations that are often closest to and addressing the needs of their local communities. Facing tougher economic pressures today, many are struggling to do that. to.pbs.org/4fNoCIn

Local arts groups that shape community culture face financial pressure

The Trump administration is trying to gut one of the strongest laws protecting tribal sacred sites, burial grounds, and ancestral lands. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act has worked since 1966. Now a handpicked Council voted to rewrite it..in one week. Here's what at stake.👇

you know how tsunamis don’t seem insidious until they surge and destroy everything? yeah that’s basically what sportsbooks and the prediction markets are doing to millions of bank accounts right now

Buster Keaton didn't stand still while a two-ton housefront collapsed on top of him with a window cut out to barely clear his shoulders on each side so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."

Just received my first radio promo for AI created music... They made it clear that it was composed by a human but orchestrated by AI. I do not envy defending that position.

If the Nobel committee won’t give Trump the Peace Prize for ending the most number of wars… maybe they’ll give it to him for ending one war the most number of times.

Came across the phrase "cognitive DDOS" to describe our present culture. Understood instantly what it meant.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs) Good tech. Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales) Bad tech.

“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

Los Angeles, 2019. I am a courier, delivering important materials by hand. In order to navigate the dirty, crowded streets better, I glide through them on a pair of roller blades. I'm what's known colloquially as an ANDROID MURDERER. (There was a mix-up at the job name factory.)

"Fair use for art making really shouldn’t be the frame for any of these conversations at all. The conversation should be, why do private corporations get to own this technology? " Such a good interview with Negativland on Tone Glow open.substack.com/pub/toneglow...

Just stumbled on this brutal gutpunch of a video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSq6... I've trained The Algorithm to show me stuff like this— randos working on projects and showing them to you? I've never seen this channel but I've seen a dozen like it. Dude fixes radios. The video is not about radios.
