@stevevladeck.bsky.social Will Gorsuch/Kav admonish J. Clark for disobeying their unexplained orders? Will Alito say it violated the Purcell principle? Will Barrett call it an act of an ‘imperious judiciary’? They describe District judges that way when it suits the GOP, they’ll be consistent right?

Question: if Democrats somehow win the Senate special elections in Ohio and Florida, when do they assume those seats? November? December? January? If it’s November or December—and McConnell remains out of commission—the senate would be 50-49 (GOP) between the midterm elections + the new congress

The reason Ossoff is campaigning and fundraising so unrelentingly is so that he can push Bottoms past the finish line. With a Democratic Governor of Georgia, Ossoff can leave the senate without costing Democrats a swing seat. Freeing him up to run for president.

I’d obviously prefer huge margins. But (1) this may be more realistic given heavy gerrymandering and (2) it may give progressive House members outsized power. If they can effectively threaten 11 defections, their negotiating leverage shoots up. Moderate Dems did the same thing in 2021.

Holy shit. www.wired.com/story/a-civi...
This past May, a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air medevac plane took off from Roswell, New Mexico, and headed west to the town of Ruidoso to pick up a patient. It shouldn’t have been a challenging flight for the two pilots and two nurses aboard. The temperature was 69 degrees; the sky was clear. The 60-mile journey normally takes a half hour, at most.

But once airborne, the plane ran into trouble. At the White Sands Missile Range that night, US military personnel were conducting a GPS jamming exercise that left the King Air pilots—and anyone else within hundreds of miles—unable to use modern navigation systems. Forced to revert to older technology, ones that they rarely if ever use, the medevac pilots got disoriented and crashed into the side of a mountain. There were no survivors.

The DSA wasn’t on the ballot in 2024, Dems still lost. If status quo, incumbent Dems could defeat fascist, they would’ve done it by now. The GOP will call Dems communists literally no matter what. Only Dems could shoot themselves in their own foot by stifling voter excitement before an election.

People harping on the Clausewitz reference, and appropriately so. But they’re missing that McCormick essentially states here that either (1) this is a war of choice or (2) that the GOP cares more about its political success than US security. It has to be one or the other.

The best way to get to the bottom of the McConnell question is for the governor to appoint a replacement. The GOP legislature passed a law stripping him of that power, but it goes against the state constitution. If they refuse to seat the replacement, take them to court. There’s zero downside.

Horrid take. Hits on something important + underrated though—Congressional Dems interact far more consistently, concretely, honestly, and for longer periods of time with GOP politicians than with average Americans. Their colleagues are realer to them than their own constituents. And that’s the issue
