Would you expect that Bacteria use an archaellum for swimming? We didn't, but we found that some Chloroflexota do! Find the story here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... A little thread below 1/n

Horizontal gene transfer of the functional archaellum machinery to Bacteria
Motility in Archaea is driven by a nanomachinery called the archaellum. So far, archaella have been exclusively described for the archaeal domain; however, a recent study reported the presence of arch...

Indeed - thank you David Goodsell for bringing science to life with art! Seeing the pilus motor featured is still my favourite grad school memory doi.org/10.2210/rcsb...

Cellular Function of a Biomolecular Condensate Is Determined by Its Ultrastructure
Biomolecular condensates play key roles in the spatiotemporal regulation of cellular processes. Yet, the relationship between atomic features and condensate function remains poorly understood. We stud...

Today is @vestager.bsky.social last day as commissioner. She has certainly left many footprints. Just take the DSA. But also literally. The protocol in the Berlaymont has been changed so that sneakers are now also part of the dress-code. Tak!

Once again, Akos is quicker than I am. To polysaccharide afficionados: EcpK, a BY pseudokinase facilitates exopolysaccharide synthesis by direct interaction with its PCP partner. We speculate that EcpK stimulates PCP by binding/unbinding cycles rather than phosphorylation/dephosphorylation cycles.

Super nice work from Simon Schäper showing that septal peptidoglycan synthases in S. aureus are not driven by FtsZ treadmilling. Instead they follow a one track model and their processive movement is dependent on peptidoglycan synthesis. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Cell constriction requires processive septal peptidoglycan synthase movement independent of FtsZ treadmilling in Staphylococcus aureus - Nature Microbiology
Single-molecule imaging reveals that peptidoglycan synthesis and synthase activity, rather than FtsZ treadmilling, are rate limiting and drive septum constriction in Staphylococcus aureus.
