Using AI to ‘talk to animals’ might make us feel clever – but what, if anything, does it do for them?
As animal behaviorists increasingly use AI in their research, they grapple with how to wield the technology responsibly

This "AI" headline is tiring (and even... retro??). * "in less than 2 seconds"? Most of our code takes less than 2s, on such simple data. Further, you need more than 2s of ECG data presumably (that's about 4 heartbeats, and you'd typically record for longer) […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Screenshot from the Guardian: the headline is "‘Superhuman’ AI tool spots heart disease in less than 2 seconds". The image shows a heartbeat ECG as a stark blue-on-black trace, looking really technological and to give you the impression you should definitely be impressed.

Pre- vs. post-experiment mean bonding scores from n=901 participants across 43 sites singing/conversing/reciting in groups of 5-10 individuals at a time (1,017 participants before planned exclusions; see Table S1). Social bonding score (y-axis) represents the mean of six self-report variables (scaled from 0-100): 1) “I feel I am on the same team with the other participants”; 2) “I am similar to the other participants’’; 3) ‘‘I trust the other participants”; 4) Inclusion of other in the self (IOS): ‘‘How close do you currently feel to all the other participants?”; 5) “I feel strong ties to the other participants”; 6) “I have a lot in common with the other participants”.Figure 10. Site-level mean bonding score differences across three conditions. Each row represents one experimental site, ordered by the magnitude of the bonding score change in the Singing condition, with the smallest change at the bottom and the largest at the top. Points represent site-level mean bonding score differences (Post- minus Pre-intervention) for each condition. The dashed vertical line indicates zero change. Site labels in green indicate Indo-European languages; labels in black indicate non-Indo-European languages. Sites with multiple locations within the same language are labeled with the location in brackets (e.g., “English [Auckland]”). AI listens in to help protect wildlife
Strolling through a forest, you may notice that the air is filled with sound. Birds sing, insects and small mammals rustle through the undergrowth, and at dusk bats squeak as they communicate with each other. These soundscapes contain a wealth of information about which animals are present, how many there are and how healthy an ecosystem may be. But analysing all that audio is a huge challenge.
