This explainer out of Australia is genuinely useful background and analysis of what happened with the Canada-US trade deal last night. Note that it is extremely and delightfully sweary. Also there’s an appended glossary of Australian slang. ifloz.substack.com/p/king-carne...

The map of what's driving Wakefield's economy. Good illustration of the risks and rewards of out-of-town offerings. Blog sets out Wakefield's promising plans to bolster the city centre and bring some of that economic activity inwards.

Something missing from today's coverage of the minimum wage uplift is how it 'bites' differently across the UK. We're talking from 82% of the median wage in Doncaster (equiv to Chile) to 53% in Reading (Japan). This national policy is doing very different things in different labour markets.
Chart showing minimum wage variation across UK cities, Doncaster at top, Reading at bottom.

The logic is compelling but it ratchets to full rejoin very quickly, which is why Burnham is probably right to plant his flag there. Why sink capital on a "single market minus membership" option that is feindish to negotiate, unpalatable to much of the British state and satisfies few voters?

With Merseyrail already under local control, and bus franchising soon to be completed, the future looks bright for integrated transport in Liverpool. Our modelling suggests the city could see an increase in city centre connectivity by a third, just through improvements on its existing network

This article is an excellent write up of our work on universities and their economic role in UK cities. A balanced account on what they can (and can't) do in local economies, and a recognition that any reforms to the sector must take place into consideration.

Why? Unis are big international exporters in their cities - they bring in overseas student fees and spending. 9 of top 10 English cities where universities are most important for exports are outside the Greater South East. Leicester will feel this far more than Oxford.
