ultimate gutted the game modes in order to have a massive roster so the way you approach the next game is to have more game modes with a smaller roster yes, people will complain, but you can't care about the people that want the next game to fail, that's a recipe for disaster

mario kart 8 is a really tall tower on a thin foundation while mario kart world is a shorter tower on a wider foundation and that is how you approach a new smash bros (yes there will be hot takes that ultimate is better there's no point in trying to prevent those as they will happen regardless)
