Using machine-learning to datamine publicly-available uncharacterized genomic data for potentially interesting genes isn't even anything new, I literally wrote my UNDERGRAD thesis on it back in the 2010s! They really just counted on the news media going nuts at the word "CRISPR", didn't they?
