#xivwomenweek day 7 - Woe in life, warmth in death 🌅

an illustration of sphene whose half-body takes up almost the entire background ; she is smiling but most of her face is hidden. In the center of the picture is a white heart, inside which a small wuk lamat is curled up, crying.

dnd update: an in-game 2 hour tailor shop visit turns into my character confessing what she's ACTUALLY here for and finding out she has actual allies in the party (and the discussing how the bard in the party could assassinate her). BUT I ALSO MADE HER DRESS IN DRESSMAKER YAAAAAY

I feel like there's a cohort of us who got on the internet before "social media" and made all sorts of healthy friendships through forums or livejournal or what have you and thus, while everyone's like SOCIAL MEDIA FUELS COMPARISON AND MISERY we're like, but that's just where my friends live.

this one??? holy shit a fun zombie novel and somehow solving all of your homophobia problems with violence doesnt like... make your family love you. but it does make it easier to let them go. this packed a fuckin WALLOP for 94 (?????? ONLY 94???) pages.

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

getting into some more talk about these books but?? this really unsettled me. it was just such an interesting premise for a novel, and the medical horror and medical neglect was just damning. but even more insidious was the... resentment. the rage. the sadness Ellen feels as her own life is taken.

#lonbookposting sadly i dont think i'm going to make my annual goal again this year, but this has been a year of SO MANY start and stops on novels. i've had more DNFs this year than i have in recent memory and as much as i would like to power through in 3 months to read another 25 books??? lmao

#lonbooks2026 16) Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees BARK BARK BARKBARKBARKBARKBARK HOLY SHIT THIS RULES LMAO. the cute aesthetic doesnt detract from the serial killer story, but it also isnt such a "waow subversive" move either imo. it's simply a story of ones nature told with woodland creatures.

#lonbooks2026 15) Hunger dont ask me how hard the cannibalism book made me cry, bc the answer is so fucking hard. love can't combat capitalism. love can't pay your bills. love can't give you a home. but you can be a home to the one you love. sigh i wish romance was real and someone would eat me.

000

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 14) Grief Eater a novella that hit me right in the gut. it was so much beefier than its short 94(????) pages. messy and so incredibly sad despite the viscera. when the closest thing to love is being drenched in blood, how can you not relish the gore?

000

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 13) I, Medusa hrm. another pretty serviceable feminist myth retelling with all the modern trappings to expect. I didnt DNF it, but I don't think it really soaked into my bones like some of the other stuff i've read this year. a very "good for her" sort of book but that's really all.

000

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 12) The Lamb "hedonistic sapphic cannibal narcissists fuck up a perfectly good child. look at her, she's got trauma." man i wish this had done some more with what was going on... it felt so flat in spots when the highlights are so rich and overwhelming. sad, gross, and very very cold.

010

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 11) A Veritable Household Pet the sort of horror novel that doesnt have blood dripping down the walls but makes every page feel like you're trapped. there were moments I believed that the best outcome was possible; unfortunately for all these characters, they're stuck in a tragedy.

010

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 10) The Empress of Salt and Fortune a novella that doesn't waste time trying to explain the universe, because you dont need to know the universe. you need the story that these characters are telling. it's a novella in the style of a story told at the hearth. fascinating but brief.

Lon @lonesiekarp.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

#lonbooks2026 9) Yesteryear I wish I could say something deep and impactful about this but when the twist hit, i was FLABBERGASTED. no joke, i chewed on this like the trashy bit of tabloid joy that it was. i know it could go deeper and analyze more about fundies&fascism, but... also... eh.
