this matters because Canadian crash data reveals alarming, very preventable consistent infrastructure trends. www.regionofwaterloo.ca/programs-and...
Region of Waterloo information:

Walking safety
Pedestrians face a higher risk at signalized intersections:

89% of pedestrian collisions are at signalized intersections
56% of pedestrians who are hit by vehicles have the right of way
1 in 3 pedestrian collisions are caused by a turning vehicle

Calgary has an amazing off-street pathway system with over 1,000km. So when someone proposes to stop building on-street pathways for bicycling and leave that space for cars, it seems doable. Maybe even reasonable… until you take a closer look. #Calgary #yycBike #yyc

Also people who fly to the cities must figure out transportation there as well, taxis, Ubers, car rentals are always options along with transit l. I wouldn't be surprised if car rental shops pop up near the train stations

Turning the traffic lights would be such a low cost fix that I don't know why they haven't done it. They could easily do the high risk intersections first, and then just schedule the rest for when they need maintenance anyways

People don't realize how deeply ingrained racism and classism is. A way I point it out is pedestrian deaths. Ask them what their first thoughts are. Is it "were they in a crosswalk?" "Were they playing on the phone and not playing attention?" and not "what was the driver doing?"

I work at the airport and there's so much good urbanism there like level crosswalks, brand new bollards going in front to the doors, and little things like free strollers that can be borrowed. I miss the link busses that were wheelchair accessible. The airport downgraded to golf carts

I have a challenge for Cdns.. I know you read. (Remember forcing English on Indigenous, right?) Can you please stop using ableist language to describe Americans? I believe, like Carney, we outwit them with more descriptive language that doesn’t add to the morally incomprehensible eugenics we already deploy through policy. Google alternatives.

People font like change in general. That's what fuels a lot of NIMBYism. They want to keep things comfortable, and change is very uncomfortable unless they've already experienced the new thing and know it's going to be more comfortable, they'll fight against it

Sarcasm aside, contact allergies to common items like the perfumes and astringents found in cleaning products, and your own sweat is real. My Mom is allergic to pretty much anything she touches especially metal, and I get raw skin from the gloves I wear at work trapping my own sweat

That’s why you don’t see anyone riding a bicycle on dangerous streets. 🤷‍♂️

As a resident of Pembrooke, the answer is. There's nowhere to walk to, and it isn't pleasant to walk around. You probably noticed the lack of shade trees on pathways. So even if something is within easy walking distance, walking isn't nice enough to think about you for a stroll
